does anyone know if i can just unplug the sensor and replace it with a new one that came with my auto meter gauges? i did this today and the truck runs fine so far, but i'm guessing that the computer somehow monitors the temp huh? do you think i could splice the original wire into the new sensor lead for the auto meter and make the gauge on the dash work again???

The way you have your Autometer guage hooked up is fine. That temp sender is only used for the guage in the cluster. The computer uses the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor for its readings. I can't think of any reason that you could not tap your original temp sender into the Autometer line. A lot of us old Mustang guys did it that way with no problems at all.

You may have a problem with the voltage if you use the sender to provide signal for both gauges. They would both likely be low. But try it and see.
