I am working on my father-in-laws 91 explorer.I have ordered a new shift motor, because after i took his out and went to rebuild it i found out the circuit board is toast.
When we originally tried to use the push button switches you could here a series of clicks in the back drivers side wheel well. Then it would sound and feel like it was trying to engage. Then all you heard was some nasty banging and grinding and it would buck and bounce till you hit the button again.
Here's my question after all the above info.
Is there anyway if i remove the old motor to manually shift the transfer case?
I thought maybe just putting a set of grips on the stub that extense(sp) out of the case and giving that a twist,or taking apart the old motor and using the "gear wheel" to turn the transfer shaft?
I dont want him putting out that type of money only to find out its someting else.
He's on retired and on SS so money is tight for him and i'm trying to help out.
Any thoughts?
