I got my Explorer about 6 months ago and thought about changing the spark plugs on general principle but after a quick look I decided to wait till it had to go to the garage for something and have them do it.
I then found you guys and have since gotten the tips and courage to tackle the job.
Only took about two hours last Sat. morning to get the B.P.4's and Auto Zone wires installed. I just turned 60,000 miles and even my wife noticed the difference in the performance. Even if there was no difference in the performance I would have thought it was better because I did it myself.
Again, thanks...

Hi Bill,
We are glad that the site has helped you. There are alot of good people here that are more than willing to help out. all you gotta do is ask. Dead Link Removed I know that I get more satisfaction when I do things to my truck than if I have the shop do it. Dead Link Removed
Hey have you had a chance to do any 4wheelin' yet?

Im in the same boat as you. I'm slowly learning how to do more and more things with my Explorer and I'm going to make my first attempt at changing spark plugs either this weekend or next weekend depending on weather. I'll be the first to admit I'm usually the type to have things installed/repaired by a pro but as I get more into it I'm working on learning more of it and I'd say my knowledge of this stuff has increased incredibly in just the last few months that I've had my Explorer. Fortunately I've got some good mechanically knowledgeable friends in the Colorado area who are willing to help me for cheap and once I understand it, I can usually do the things on my own. If I ever sell my Explorer and get something else I hope to do a lot of the work myself... guess we'll see. Wish me luck, I'll probably going with the bosch Platinum 4's and some really good spark plug wires, I can use all the power I can get.

Hey, matt don't worry, just remember to change those plugs when the engine is cold (there is several reasons why). Just take your time doing it! And be prepared to be frustrated - the passenger side is a close fit!

When you guys start to work on your truck make sure you have a good manual. These help out considerably, expecially with the firing order of the plugs and wires.

As for the passenger side plugs they can be a hassle but you can access the plug closest to the passenger compartment, (#3), by turning the front wheels to the right or left and reaching through the wheel well. The plug is right in front of you. (modern engineering, gotta love it).

Hope this helps,
FM

The best way I found to get the #3 sparkplug
(Close to the firewall) is go through the
wheel well, just above the oil filter. Dead Link Removed

Ray, The only 4 wheeling I've done was up and down snow covered two tracks getting to the ice fishing lakes. And no I did'nt drive on the ice this winter. Two reasons.
1. Preety warm winter. 2. Truck is still too new to me.
After removing the air filter and tube (canister type) I was able to reach the left side plugs from the front. Skined my knuckles less on the left(Passenger) sidethan I did on the right.
Now for the trans. filter and than the exhaust. Something to look forward too.

I'm in the same boat of learning. My friend the mechanic keeps telling me that I don't want to work on my truck. I keep telling him that I want to learn how to do it myself.

Everytime I go to his shop I try to do more and more on my truck. I have a Chiltons manual and almost choked when I found out that the Ford shop manual is in the $120-$160 prince range depending on where you get it. It is planned for my birthday.

Bill - good luck on you new toy and keep asking questions and taking educated guesses on working on your truck.

Took me about 45 minutes to change the plugs on my Explorer. Passenger side rear plug is easily changed through the wheel well. Turn the tire inward for easier access. I know several people have had a tough time replacing plugs. This is the second set of Autolite Platinums I have used and gets easier the more I do it.
