My '05 RANGER is currently in the transmission shop having the drive shaft replaced. It clunks when it starts to roll from a dead start. While it's there I'm having them investigate the 4x4. Doesn't seem to work for me. However at the shop the other day they called and said it engaged everytime they tried it. 
later they called back and said that it had gotten intermittant. Said it might be the switch. I think by reading this forum that it is the ECM. Warm or cold doesn't seem to matter. But since I replaced the battery a few weeks ago, this forum now makes sense.
