No matter how sharp i turn the front end will bind and stop the truck if i put the clutch in.. around corners the back end hops and the inside tire will sqeal like there are lockers on it and the spider gear will not allow the internal radius to be differnt. i have not pulled the front end off yet.. i was hoping to get some ideas before taking things apart.. i think that the Traction control modual may have gone bad and is not allowing the wheels to be independent but is forcing all of them to turn at the same time. any ideas would be greatly apprecaited Thanks Todd

Welcome to the site.. It doesn't sound like the control trac is malfunctioning.. You'll notice some binding when going around turns since the inner wheels will turn faster than the outer wheels. Also check your CV axles, maybe the angle is too severe.

It does sound like the 4WD is engaged for some reason. With the symtoms you said, that exactly what it will do when in 4WD.

Check your door tag to see if you have the LSD differential. Limited slip differential might not be slipping. We just fixed a seemingly similar problem to yours on 1997 X with 100K. Symptoms appeared suddenly: slow speeds, dry parking lots, turning tight corners loud grinding noise with visible pressure at front wheels and a spring winding up type noise from the rear.

The fix was to change the differential fluid and we added two little bottles of the slippery stuff for the clutch packs.

We had ours in to two different dealers for their diagnosis. One said it was $1000 worth of front end work and the other thought it could be lots of different reasons why the 4WD wasn't disengaging. My good old husband and his friends figured out the problem.

unplug the connector harness to the transfer case and try it, if it goes away than it is the t case

thank you for all of the great ideas i forgot to mention i have the control trac AWD system and i hate it if anyone has a quick fix to put in manual hubs and get rid of it i would also appreciate it thank you todd

Do a search on the brown wire mod.. Its the only alternative since the 2nd generation don't have hubs, they have cv axles..
Here's the link on how to disable the control trac.. Dead Link Removed

Just go under the driver seat and put a switch or relay on the brown wire..
