I'm going to try and get some heat out of my Explorer this winter and I've heard that it's common for the stock thermostat to be faulty. I picked up a new thermostat for my '96 4.0 at Autozone and I just noticed it didn't come with a gasket. Is there a reuseable o-ring in the thermostat housing or do I need to get a new gasket?

There is a reusable rubber gasket on your Explorer but sometimes they are not that reusable. I've reused mine befor but I've also had them end up leaking. A new gasket isn't that expensive and I say it is worth it.

A new rubber gasket should be only $1.50; with the thermostat and fluid, the total s/b less than $10. Use a 2' length of 3/8" hose to help drain the old fluid into an appropriate container and dispose at your local recycling center.

I saw a noticeable improvement in engine 'hum' and gas milage after I replaced the original.

Also, this was the easiest replacement I have ever done. ie...no damn scraping, removing paper gasket, or goo for adhesion.

I have to agree, changing the thermostat and gasket on my Explorer was one of the simplest task I've ever done. I wish I would've done it sooner because now the heater really puts out the HOT air.

kjb is your motor sohc 4.0lit as the thermostat in mine is a lot bigger then the standed type and i cant find anyone in australia who sells them in 180dec
