Thermostat or Sensor??

My Engine temperature gauge is always reading low. How do I check if its the Thermostat or Sensor and where do I locate them on a '93 Explorer XLT.

My X always reads low too. If you've never changed the thermostat, or don't know the condition of it, it's a cheap maintenance to replace it. Follow your upper radiator hose to the engine, and the thermostat is located there. Here's a link to Autozone's repair guide.

The temperature sensor is located on the top of the intake manifold, to the right of the thermostat housing. Here's a link to Autozone's repair guide.

Once the vehicle has warmed up (driven for 5 min or so) how does the heat feel in the cabin once you turn it all the way up? If it isn't hot the thermostat is likely not closing all the way which would cause the engine to be continuously cooled. If the cabin air if hot and and the temp gauge reads low there is a problem in the temp sensor or wiring.

You only need to drain the fluid so you can remove the T-stat without spilling antifreeze all over the place. Antifreeze is very toxic to animals and a small amount will kill them.
