Thermostat/temperature control playing up

For the past 6 months my 98 explorers thermostat has been playing up a little. In the summer, for a while, it was stuck on max heat but eventually somehow free'd itself. Now it can get stuck on hot from time to time, however whenever I try to dial it down there's a slow groan from the inside passenger's side whilst it attempts to adjust itself. Strangely when it goes from cold to hot, it does make the noise.

Do I need a replacement or is there some basic maintenance that can be undertaken?
