My explorer runs wery cold the gauge moves up a little bit in the beginning then when the thermostat opens it drops down to nothing, do you think it's the thermostat who is failing or what?

You should check the fan clutch. You also should fix the problem sooner than later. You should start by replacing the thermostat.

Park the Explorer with the engine running. If your temp gauge moves into the normal range drive the car around and see what happens to the gauge. If the T-Stat is stuck open the temp will immediate drop down to cold. Running cold is far better than running hot, but your engine is designed to operate within the normal range for best efficiency/performance.

Mine was running cool according to the gauge, and the idle was higher than normal. A new thermostat fixed it. I would suggest another brand thermostat (such as Stant) if they're available where you live. The factory Motorcraft that's made in Germany seems to be failure prone. I've seen a lot of them stick open.
