Hey guys dont know if this belongs here,i looked and figured this would be the best forum. My wife is prenant so i figured hell since i own a lifted 3.O ranger ill just buy her an explorer which is more practical than her eclipse. Anyway got some questions. Whats the mph roughly on explorers? Whats the most common problems? And finally whats the price range on them with miles? i looked at a 96 yesterday with 136k on it and the guy wanted $4500, am i krazy cause i thought that was alittle to much for the milegde
It really depends on the generation of X you are looking at
you mentioned a '96 i have 130K on my '97 and haven't had an problems with it but am starting to fear that i need to replace my intake gaskets (pretty common problem with the OHV)
A 1996 XLT in good condition with 135K 4WD auto (KBB) books at $3015 excellent condition is at $3425 So yeah that guy's price is a little high

I think the price is a bit high but the 96 is a very good year for explorers. I would say 3600 MAX if it was spotless with every option.
I'm biased toward the 96 cause I have an EB with 135K miles. I believe their powertrains are the most reliable v6 explorer of any year. Why? The OHV is a proven engine with very few problems that have simple solutions(intake gasket(usually at very high mileage), thermostat). I know people with 300K-400 with no major engine work. The SOHC has some serious issues with the internal tensioner, you have to be very careful. Its not a bad engine but has serious issues with the intake gaskets failing often and its tensioners(some are in the back)
Also, the 96 trans is the 4 speed, with less problems than the 5 speed (all 97+). It is improved over the early generation Explorers, and lacks the 5 speed shift issues. From reviews I read the trans issues weren't fully straightened out until 2004-5.
If I had to get another Explorer, I either get a 96 or a V8.
