sorry if this isnt meant or not allowed to be in this forum or if it is supposed to be in another explorer forum..

i was looking for some thoughts on the private price i should be selling my 2002 ford explorer at and i will list the specs of it below.

it is a 2002 ford explorer xlt, mineral gray with painted black trim. outside has its surface scrates no major dents or scratches.

it has 6000k hid headlights
cold air intake
lous custom exhaust
15 percent tint all around
4 polk audio speakers
bwm
it has the regular rims with continental tires with less than 1k on them
verde arctic wheels with lexani tires bought about 5 weeks ago
the car itself has almost 140k on it , the engine was replaced and has about 80 k on it, and the transmission was new 6 k ago and has a 36,000 mile warranty (30k left)
blacked out tails and corners.
the oil is synthetic

there are a few problems, it need seatbelt pretensioners ( airbag light is on)
abs sensors

those are the only problems with the truck and i was thinking of fixing them before sale, the interior is in good to min condition and cleaned once a week.

for a price i was thinking somethin around 8-9 k with everything?

Youll never get that. Really its going to be hard to sell because most people want these to haul around the kids. When I listed mine I was constantly getting offers from $5500-$6000. I needed $6500 to get the new (05 EB) explorer I wanted. Mine has 0 problems (aside from the interior lights not shutting off) and has new coil springs, 2 new bearings, and only 95K miles. New engine will probably be scary to most people (thinking its a sign that you didnt take care of the truck). Also if you dont have the third row expect to take a slight hit for that.

There is a guy who has his on craigslist now, its a 2003 thats modded with a lot less miles and 0 problems, hes asking 10K and its been up for a long time. Put it up for $7K and it might move.

hey guy not to steal the thread but to fix your issue with your interior lights not shutting off. spray a cleaner/degreaser in your door latches that will fix her right. spray then open and close the door a few times then spray again.

I tried spraying them once with WD and it worked for a few hours then back again. Ill try doing it twice like you said though.

Thanks!

I think $8-9k is a bit of a stretch, I saw a ton of 02-04's turned in for the $4,500 cash for clunkers in my area. As was said before, people are going to be scared away from the fact that it has both a replacement engine and tranny.

As for the warranty on the tranny, those don't usually carry over to a new owner so you might want to double check it before advertising that it will have a 30k warranty.

I see 02's with the 120k mileage area go for anywhere from $3.5k-6.5k here. It depends a lot on condition, which your's takes a huge hit just for having a rebuilt/replaced engine and tranny. Just to give you an idea, I'd rather take a vehicle that has 140k miles and runs strong than one with an engine rebuilt/replaced 50k miles ago.

I'm sorry if you were expecting more, but you have to be realistic when selling, otherwise people will walk away from looking at your vehicle laughing. As for any mods or stereo equipment, you have to figure they add $0 to the general public market. I've seen countless auto's sit and rust away with a "for sale" sign on them because it's a $1,000 car with $5k in rims/stereo/paint and the owner is trying to get $6k for it.

Try hitting them with a carb cleaner, it will break up any gunk quicker and more effectly than WD-40. After you get it cleaned hit it with WD-40 to lube it.

you need to make sure you use a cleaner that wont get sticky. try brake cleaner or carb cleaner just watch the paint and interior with that stuff. i use brake cleaner myself

edit: excali beat me to it. but i don't lube them at all unless its right before winter then i clean em out

You can't charge extra for custom items, unless you find someone who really wants them. Most people don't want custom items, like blacked out tails and corners, or HID lighting, both of which are illegal almost anywhere. The ABS and Airbag lights are going to scare almost everyone off. I work in a auto repair shop, and I have never seen pretensioners just fail. In my experience, the pretensions only contract when the airbags blow. That would scare the crap out of me if I looking to buy a vehicle. That would mean its probably been wrecked and who knows how well it was repaired.

If I were in your situation, I would correct the ABS and Airbag issues, put OEM lights back in it, and lower my price a lot. The suggested retail price is around 7k, and private party is a little more than 5k. Explorers are generally soccer mom vehicles to most, and a soccer mom is going to skip over a vehicle with an expensive audio system and loud exhaust and buy another cheaper vehicle.

Yeah I used WD about an hour ago and was tempted by the carb cleaner sitting next to it on the shelf. Ill go back out and try the carb cleaner since the WD didnt work.

OP sorry for hijacking your thread.

The mods you've done won't be appealing to the vast majority of buyers, and buyers for used Ex's aren't exactly crawling out of the woodwork anyway.

With what you've done with it, I'd say $5k is tops.

From your list:

it has 6000k hid headlights- could be ok, but most will be indifferent about it.
cold air intake- won't care
lous custom exhaust- turns moms off, reduced value
15 percent tint all around- turns moms off, reduced value
4 polk audio speakers- won't care
bwm- modified stock drivetrain- decreased value
it has the regular rims with continental tires with less than 1k on them- good
verde arctic wheels with lexani tires bought about 5 weeks ago- meh- rims don't seem to get people to spend more money, they're too personal
the car itself has almost 140k on it , the engine was replaced and has about 80 k on it, and the transmission was new 6 k ago and has a 36,000 mile warranty (30k left)- could be worth another $1k, but lots of Ex's can be found with 80k, and the body is still 140k old. Trans- might turn someone off actually, odd as it sounds- it's almost too new.
blacked out tails and corners- mom turnoff- decreased value
the oil is synthetic- who cares

there are a few problems, it need seatbelt pretensioners ( airbag light is on)- lights are bad.
abs sensors- mom turnoff- bigtime. If the ABS doesn't work right, they won't want to drive their kids in it, I wouldn't. Fix them.

In all, I think 95% of the people that see your ad will flip right through it, or drive by. Just my friendly .02 All the best of luck meant! :)

As for the "modded" Ex, that's ridiculous. When you have to put "CALIPERS ARE PAINTED BRIGHT RED ... PAID $30" and "MOTOR HAS BEEN FLUSHED OUT AT 75,000 MILES (SUPER CLEAN)" (with what- the $1.59 can of Motor Flush/Kerosene?) your sale needs help. :D
