Thinking about upgrading...

Im looking to get out of my 99 Sport and into a 2002-2005 Mountaineer. So which one is the hot ticket? Anything I should look out for? Should I just skip the 05 and go for an 06-up?

As with the 02 explorers, skip the 02 mounties as well. Its more problem riddled than 03+. As for going 06+, I would say its dependent on your budget. I test drove an 08 premier AWD V8. Man that thing was nice, but the price tag was not so nice. Assuming your sport has the SOHC, you know how that motor feels, it is the same v6 that is in the newer mounties/exs. If you want more power go for the v8.

So stay away from 02 Explorer/Mountys? 03-05 are fine though? Anything else to stay away from?

As for the 06+ I CAN have the budget if the deal is right. Sometimes I see 06+ for like a few grand more than an 05.

I believe the 06+ have different suspension components that make them ride nicer, but I am not totally sure. I would say the newer the better, but then again, what do i know, i own a 2nd gen sport too. Ive only read about the 3rd gens, i don't have any hands on experience with them.

The best year to buy would 2005 or if you have the extra cash an 07 up. The 2006 V6 have radiator problems and minor electrical issues compared to 07 up. Definitely stay away from 2002.

I believe they have trans issues, as well as rear end issues.

Coil spring issues, wheel bearing issues, factory ball joints didn't last long enough either.
