I agree, I've got almost 150,000mi one my factory tranny and it still shifts fine and feels good ( as i knock on wood right now). Amazing how long things can last when you drive like an old man!
I bought my explorer with 94K and the guy showed me the service records that it just got changed at 92K so I didn't check the tranny until I got it home and it was black as night and smelled burnt. The shop only changed about 4 of the 12 quarts of fluid and the filter when the dropped the pan! I knew the thing needed some work but not like this.... anyway, a return was not an option on this used vehicle so I pulled the transmission lines and using a length of tranny hose from the auto parts bled fluid from the transmission oil cooler lines into an oil pan while I poured fresh fluid from the top until it was reasonably red about 1 case of oil later. Shops wanted $150 to "flush" the system. I drove it about 8K miles and then dropped the pan, cleaned all the mettle shavings, replaced the filter and gasket after bleeding the trans cooler until it ran dry. I forgot to do one thing. I should have kept the fluid flowing out of the torque converter to the oil cooler flowing into my waiste container after refilling the tranny. I ended up only changing about 1/2 the fluid. It's working fine so far and no longer smells burnt. You can "save" a high milage transmission if you flush it good before something really bad happens. I plan on changing the fluid again at about 10K more miles and add Slick 50 transmission treatment to the unit and hope like hell it keeps on shifting for many more miles because I don't want to put any more money into this old (93) vehicle. If this tranny had gotten regular service for the first 100K it would probably go another 100 but right now I'll be happy with 50 because I will sell it when it reaches 125K rc
