Hi Guys,
I am a Newbie to this group, but I need SERIOUS help from ya all. I am planning to buy a 91 Ford Explorer which has 180K on it. The engine runs smooth and also the Transmission is gr8. Could you tell me if I should go ahead and buy it(The price is unbeatable!). Since I am a student, I am financially constrained if anything happens(GOD forbid!). How many more miles do you, experienced folks, think will the SUV survive?? What problems should I look into when I buy the car? Any help appreciated!
Cheers,
Michman!

it depends the transmissions are known to be very weak if it looks good go for it but do not expect it to be maintence free

Thanks for the reply, but could you please let me know how much the monthly/annual maintenance expense I could incur(an approximate estimate please) and also how many more miles could I put on it! I basically use it to goto school and come back(around 5-10miles/day)

well, if money is a big constraint for you, then maybe you shouldn't be looking at SUVs. i put $40 of gas in mine every week, sometimes 2-3x/week. but i guess how much you drive it, and how you drive it are big factors[ i drive basically all day every day, and when i am respondign to calls as a volly fireman, im basically flooring the pedal from stops to get up to speed, so i go through a TON of gas]. also, like billy said, the A4LD is an extreamly weak tranny. i had to replace mine 2 months after i got it (for $2000, which is CHEAP for a rebuilt tranny with labor) other than that, should you decide to buy it, i think you will not be disappointed. i have a 92 eddie bauer and i love it, and wouldn't trade it in for anything. depends on how much time and experience you have, but if you are looking to save money, any minor repairs you can easily fix now that you have found this amazing website. just become familiar with the "search" page. these engines routinely run to 200k+ miles (my friend's 92 eddy has 345k on it, no joke, but he did have to replace the ranny at 150k), just check to see if it is the original transmission. if it is, the buy could be risky, especially considering how many miles it has on it. not counting to replace the transmission (A question of WHEN not IF) then annual maitnence costs will be from $1500/year - $3000/year (including gas and incidentals)

also, if you do buy the truck, i highly recommend that you invest a few dollars into becoming an elite explorer. rick runs this site out of his own pocket and it will more than pay for itself in the money that you will save on maitnence. i have started doing all repairs myself on my car, and i have gotten an estimate before every repair i do, and so far, in the 1 year i have owned my truck, i have saved over $1,500 in labor (and there really hasn't been a whole lot wrong with my truck) its donations that keep this site up and running, and trust me, you won't regret it

Hi J,
The guy who is selling it to me says its an original transmission and he has had the truck for 4 years and has put in 35k miles on it with no probs....If I buy the SUV, it will be my first rig(that's my experience in this field:D ). Please lemme know!

I have a 94 XLT and i had to replace the tranny at 160,000. If it has 4x4, be carefull with the automatic lock out hubs. If your going to be needing to use it reg. i would change them out with manuals. save you a TON of money! If its in decent shape, go for it! i love my explorer. if it had no windows and the floorboards were rusted out, id still drive it!

here is what I would look for in buying a car. some of these may seem odd - but keep in mind, by checking various systems and how well they have been maintained can give you a pretty accurate picture of how well the truck has been maintained throughout its life. i would first start with the most obvious areas/ check for rust around the bottom of the door panels - this should not dictacte weather to buy or not, but it can give you a good indication of how well kept the truck is. i notice you are in boston, and i would expect a great deal of rust from what i hear of new england winters. if there is little or no rust, then you can safely assume that it has been moderately well-kept. also, check the oil change sticker (if there is one) if it is expired, then you can bet the car hasn't been serviced regularly. oil changes are vital to the well-being of a car, so if it has been serviced regularly, you can expect it to be a pretty reliable vehicle for you. also, check the oil dipstick. is it too low? is the oil a funny color? i would also do this with the transmission dipstick (Seeing as how the A4LD is much less reliable than the engine.) heat KILLS transmissions, so if the fluid is odd-looking, then you can bet the tranny will fail. i would also get a DVOM (Digital Volt-Ohm Meter aka multimeter) and check the battery voltage. it should be about 12v - (this is what i have noticed in my truck - it will not even start at 11v, but i have a LOT of electronics that are always on, so some trucks might start at lower voltages) low voltage means the battery is dying. higher voltage means there is a faulty voltage regulator on the alternator. checking the battery is vital since you depend on it to start the car, and if the battery or alternator are not working properly, then they can cause problems with many other systems. i would also check to make sure that it has a jack, lug wrench and a spare tire. nothing is worse than having a flat on the side of a highway, going to change the tire, and you're missing one of the parts (happened to me on the way back from school - of course it had to happen on the one day it was 5 degrees out and i had decided to wear shorts for the trip home) if you do decide to buy it, i know you will not regret it. my family owns 3 explorers, and although they do require their share of maitnence (usually by my me) they are a lot of fun, and i still love driving my explorer as much now(if not more) than before i replaced my tranny brakes and engine.

pretty much everything has been said already...

It's your decision... all I can say is that when I look at an Explorer for sale it doesn't really matter what year it is or what condition... if the price is right I go for it. As for transmission... I kind of doubt that at over 180k miles it's still an original but... you never know, it might be in good shape. Sometimes that tranny work can be more expensive than your total cost for the truck
;)

You can expect that some things might go wrong with it no matter how you're gonna pamper it...
it's a used truck... but also on the other hand you might put another 180k miles on it without many problems.

Definatelly stick around if you do buy it... we'll be here to help you any way we can down the road...

and BTW!!! WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Hi Guys and J,
Thanks for ALL the info.....Just one more Question...everyone here is stressing so much about the tranny....When I go to buy the truck, how should I check for the Tranny and also what are the indications during the test drive which I should look for, that indicates any fault in the tranny, engine or for that matter anything?? Hope you guyz will help me on this one too!!!!
Thanks.

check the transmission fluid it should be red check for the overdrive light flashing theat would indicate a fault in the transmission and make sure it goes through all of the gears in the test drive you may also want to check teh operation of 4x4 and 4x4 low

Is there any reason why you need an suv? Gas will kill you, and if you're not wheeling/towing there is no reason to get an X.

I am a HUGE guy 6ft 8in and I don't fit into any cars...legspace and what not....So, thought I would buy a SUV and drive and maintain it rather than buying a smaller CAR! What are your thoughts?

Sounds like you have thought about it and know what you are getting into. A good place to go might be http://www.explorer4x4.com/faq.htm but I will sum it up for you. The X costs about $.60 a mile to operate. If you can afford it the I say GO FOR IT!!!

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, but, are the parts expensive? 'Coz, I am planning to work on it myself (If anything happens to it..GOD FORBID!). I wanna know as much as possible abt the 91 EB!

Get it on the highway and drive a steady 65 mph. Thach should be about 2100 rpm. The overdrive can fail in these and you won't notice anything other than it taching 700-1000 rpm higher. Find a hill, put transmission in manual low (1st) and let the vehicle go down in idle. see if there is engine braking. Tach should follow speed. Put transmission in reverse and see if there is a delay or you have to rev the engine in order to get it to back up.

check the tranny fluid - it shouldnt smell burnt or look black. it should be a dark redish color

parts are readilly available from most of the FLAPS or local dealers. I fix everything on my trucks... never actually took them to dealers with anything more than a recall or oil change in winter. Buy one of those Haynes manuals... pretty helpful for the beginner...

Whatta coincidence!!!!! I too am looking to buy a '91 EB by this weekend if everything works out fine! BTW, hope your seller is not VairKing :p!!!!! LOL
Keep you updated and all the best for your buy!
