It seems that lately I've seen a couple of threads here and elsewhere regarding the flowmaster muffler with the v6 being pretty decent. Is this true? If so, which exact muffler is the best fit from flowmaster. If NOT, what are some other options. I know I see the Gibson as pretty much the only system but what are some other muffler options for a v6.

Thanks
Dave

I installed a flowmaster super 40 series with a rectangular silverline tip exiting behind the drivers side rear tire. I also took off the resonator and left the catalytic converter because I was scared of the affects it might make in the computer. It sounds really good though. Does anybody know the affects of cutting the cat off of a v6?

well there r plenty different classes of flowmaster mufflers... saying "a flowmaster" could be any series... it ranges from a wide-open style muffler such as the 40 series (which i own and will describe) to the 50 and 70 series that contain more baffling for a decreased decibel level... any muffler is basically going to sound the same with a V6... the main difference will be whether or not u get a "dumped" style (turndown), have it welded into the stock location with stock piping, or purchase a catback (flowmaster doesnt make one for 3rd gen explorers though)... my suggestion is to have it welded in the stock location and weld a new tip on the end of it if u care about how it looks coming out the back... if u just want sound alone, go ahead and leave the stock tip... heres what ull be getting if u go with a flow 40... this is stock piping with a 3 1/2'' magnaflow tip (non-resonated)

Bigapple - thanks
What's the piping diameter of the explorers? Also, what inlet/outlet setup did you go with. Center/offset, what?

Also, big apple - how you likin that spring and tire setup? :)

the diameter of the regular piping is 3 inches i believe... the magnaflow tip was 3'' on one end and 3 1/2'' on the other and it slid rite over it... i would get the offset inlet and center outlet... people recommend the other way around but this seems to work for me... i think ull be ok either way

these tires have done well for me... ive had the springs for almost 2 years now and they have held up thru plenty abuse... the tires are pretty good for all terrains and seem to catch traction wherever i put it... mud is a little more difficult in a 2wd but it still keeps me going if i keep my foot down... its been workin well

Not sure about the 4.0, but the 4.6 has 2.25" exhaust. I doubt very much the 4.0 is 3" and would guess that both the 4.0 & 4.6 use the same exhaust - ie 2.25".

I also don't have a flowmaster muffler, but I do have a Lukey muffler on my 4.6, and the sound is very deep and rumbley - so much so that I added a cheap resonator to the rear just to remove some of the boom out for the exhaust note, but it is still nice and deep, and you know you're driving a V8.

Lukey muffler:

Resonator (and yes, I know it looks ricey, but it does the job it was bought to do so it's not really rice):

I got dual 40 series flowmasters on my 01 sport they are 2 1/2 inch tips but i might get 3 or 3 1 /2 inch tips

jcuz u got a sound clip of that exhaust at all

i got a 96 XLT X and I have a flowmaster 40 series on.. i like it but not loud enough for my taste.. it will give you a good low sound inside the cab from 1 -3 gear probably from 5 - 35 MPH and then after that it just resonates too soft that its nothing.. so its not good enough for my liking..but im trying to buy a body lift kit from somewhere soon and regear the truck so not worrying bout it.. i would NOT do it again though..i would go with something more beast...but i got it for free so i took it!!

ajvisbeen I got dual 40 series flows on my 01 sport and it sounds real loud and deep. How come urs dont sound that loud and deep

yea maybe it isnt really a 3'' tubing... at least where i hooked it up on the end, on the tip was 3''... just guessing

sounds nice jcuz i like the sound

I have an 04-V6, that i put a 40 series on it after the cats and dumped out the side behinde the rear wheel instead of the back, sounds decent, loudest around 2000 rpm. But not too loud that i cant have a conversation or listen to music at low levels. However i have picked up a small rattle somewhere in back on some plastic trim from the flowmaster. But i can live with that.
