Had some fun tonight.. Picked up the girlfriend, was gonna head to the store.. Well.. We start off, She of course cranks the heat all the way up, along with the stereo, well it seems as though as soon as she turned the heat on, the motor cut off, then cut on, then the cab filled with smoke, the motor stopped again and all power shut off, I braked quickly and got out and popped the hood to see where the smoke was coming from, I thought I just shorted a wire out and it burnt the rubber.. Well at the same time Im looking under the hood, my girlfriend was out and looked underneath, she screamed "ITS ON FIRE" i said, No its not, its just smoking, calm the hell down, When all of a sudden things got 100 times worse, in a big WHOOOF the entire engine bay filled with flames from underneath, I ran like a little schoolgirl at first, but then thought quick, I was right in town next to houses so I looked for a house at a house nearby, went up, grabbed the end and ran with it (destroyed a ladys garden and shrub in the process) and somehow got it put out rather easily, and unhooked the battery. Crawled underneath after all the smoldering stopped, and saw the culprit.. The positive bat. cable casing melted off, it hit the frame, shorted out, caught some old oil on fire, and burnt the casing all along the wire. Walked to the nearest auto store (thank god i was in town) bought some new wire and connectors, got out my tool box, replaced the wire, hooked the battery back up, and she fired right up and is right back to original condition.

..... But what a damn scare. I felt so helpless watching it sit there in flames, Not even paid off yet and i'm watching it burn.

Oh yeah, and I got some cool pictures coming, A lady at the house nextdoor snapped some on her digi cam whie it was burning, I gave her my email.. She said she'd email them to me.

Sounds like the lyrics to a country and western song

I thought my Explorer was leaving me in flames tonight
The smoke and the fire gave me a fright
I saw my transport go out of sight
I thought my Explorer was leaving me in flames tonight

I'll work in the alcohol and your girlfriend's infidelity later :D

Seriously, you are lucky. Depending on the location intensity of the flames, you may have charred wiring; vacuum hose melt, oil pressure sensor, etc.

Damn thats sucks, I watched my Explorer burn and it was a very pretty sight. Hope all is well with it from now on.

Lmfao.. Gave me a good laugh.

The flames were coming from right under the tranny, where (idk if its supposed to be routed there) the positive cable is routed.. It goes from the battery, down underneath the transmission, then back up the other side. Luckily the only thing it charred up was a couple plastic wire holding clips.

Glad to hear damage was minimal.

I keep a 3 lb and a 16 lb extinguisher in the truck at all times, still hope I never have to use them.

thats a pretty crazy story, good thing no one was hurt... (especially the ex, lol)

LOL!

Bad news man, but nice job with the quick thinkin. I keep a fire extinguiser in my car after my buddies transmission nearly burned his bronco down. ;)

i've had the wiring under my seat catch on fire one night. talk about a weird feeling when you realize that the orange glow is coming from under you. now i don't have power seats.
