When I try to start up my explorer I hear a clicking from my throttle body... the engine attempts to turn over and I smell gas but it just wont start. changed spark plugs, and cables.. could it be a faulty throttle body thats stopping my 04 explorer from starting?

Hey,

Not sure if you fixed this problem yet. I have a 2004 4.6V8 and the throttle control is a fly by wire.

Check if yours has a cable running to the throttle, if it doesn't it could definitely be that the electronic throttle has failed. These also don't have an Idle Air Control valve. The idle is also controlled by the fly by wire throttle. Only pre 2004 explorers are cable driven.
