my main question is, why does my X feel like its completely disconected from the accelerator pedal. the throttle responce is great when your driving in a parking lot, but then its discusting when driving on the highway. i have never driven any type of car that makes you feel like u have no control of the acceleration. also when you floor this POS on the highway to get onto a crouded on-ramp, the ECU 'thinks' for almost 3 seconds, then decides to up the RPMs and downshift. also why is their a huge delay in shifts while accelerating, it feels like a manual transmission with a pause inbetween each gear.

how can this be mormal on a 270+ ftlb or TQ motor ? how can ford send the Explorer programmed like this, its almost dangerous ?

i even had the trans serviced @ the dealer, they replaced selinoids, and flushed the fluid, still drives the same

please help... any advise will be appreciated

It is the way the TBW system is tuned so as to minimize drivetrain abuse. Leads to better longevity which costs Ford less when they don't have to maintain it so much within the warranty period.

If you want the TBW slop tightened up then get a SCT Xcal2 tune for it. Ask whomever your tuner is, to tighten up the TBW and torque control settings along with the normal spark timing advance for higher octane fuel too. That will result in a much peppier Explorer.

sounds very promicing. i knew it was done via the computer. you can program them things to do anything. maybe even a delay in responce on purpose

anyone with an X-Cal, that can vouch for the throttle responce fix ? ? ?

It immensely helped the throttle response in my 05 Lincoln LS. Same type of TBW as the Explorers. I'll vouch for it as long as the tune is setup for it.

Thanks for the info, i have the same problem with my 05 f150

I have the same problem as well with my 2004 Explorer. When I step on the pedal "full throttle" there is a 4-5 sec hesitation. This has placed me in some very dangerous situations. I use www.bamachips.com for my mustang tuning. Doug at bamachips specializes in Ford Ranger/Explorer 4.0 setups. He stated that the SCT X-Cal will remedy the issue. I have an SCT chip in my 96 Mustang GT and have no problems with it. He can also give you a little more HP and better fuel mileage. The great thing about the X-cal is that you can reflash your ECU to the stock tune before taking the Explorer in for warranty work. They cannot trace that you use the X-cal once flashed back to stock. Leaving the X-cal tune in your ECU at time of warranty service WILL in most cases void your warranty.

hmm i smell group buy ;)... seriously i think this will be the next purchase for the explorer, BTW does this come with a 30 day refund ??

My mom has an 06 Dodge Carger with the 3.5 V6. That thing has the throttle by wire and is scary when you try to get out into traffic and it hesitates for a second. I like my throttle cable in my 94 Explorer.

Ford also has a TSB for this problem. I have a 04 Mounty with V-8. Ford dealer reflashed computer and problem was solved. If yours is still under warranty, back to the dealer for a computer reflash. TSB# TSB 04-26-20. Hope this helps.

If Ford has a TSB then it doesn't matter if your vehicle is still under warranty or not. It will be covered.

Anyone know the details on this TSB, I wouldn't mind getting mine reflashed if it wont cost anything. Mine has the lag, then 2 downshifts when merging on.

I found this on edmunds, but it doesn't say anything about the fix.

Component Description:
39. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING Bulletin Number: 04225
Bulletin Date: DEC 2004

Vehicle: 2004 Ford Explorer
Summary:
THROTTLE PEDAL RESPONSE ON TIP IN VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 10/4/2004 EQUIPPED WITH A 4.0L ENGINE. ( NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 10013399 )

Yep- bought the X-cal II from Doug at Bamachips and use his programming for my Expedition which had the same delay issues. It firmed it up just like a classic throttle by cable and the associated tuning (mild shift improvement tune 1, towing tune 2, and kick-butt all-out 3V 5.4 majic tune 3)

It was well worth the investment and the wife doesn't even notice it now as I've programmed it to really open up performance after 2500 RPM.

The same concept can apply to the Explorer.

LOL... funny that you mention that your wife does not notice it beign reprogramed, because my wife thinks im crazy because she says there is NO delay in the throttle.

i tell her that its impossible to feel a delay if you leave the pedal at 100% all the time :D

So, I'm curious. How did the tuner work out on your Explorer?

Man I have heard damn good things about Doug at Bamachips. I have seriously thought about this and have contacted Doug about what it would do for my X. I just couldn't pull the trigger and get the damn thing. If the SCT works at eliminating the damn hesitation, let us know. Sorry that you had to be the guinea pig!
