I have a 91 ford explorer and just recently my 4 wheel drive was stuck, I took it to the garage and he said he fixed the problem. Now when I make a tight turn, makes a thumping noise, what sounds like the wheels, and once it starts it won't stop until I put in reverse or gas it and stop suddenly. Can anyone help me, I want to take it to the garage again but I'd like to here what anyone else thinks before I hand over more money for the same problem?

Do you have the 4x4 engaged on wet or dry pavement? If you do stop, it's the u-joints binding up, its just what 4wheeldrives do, and you can/will damage something. Even on dirt/mud they can bind up alittle but since there is much less friction (where the road meets the tire) the drive line can kinda absorb the binding. There have been many threads about this do a search and you'll get a more techincal explination of how are 4x4 systems work. I would help more but I have a class to get too...someone else will chime in about this. If this isn't the case i'm sorry, just trying to help :)

Good Luck
CP :D

The garage says they fixed the transfer case so it's in 2H. Assuming that, then I would suspect the auto hubs are not staying disengaged. Might be too much grease in the hub, might just need new hubs.

Mine used to do the same thing when I had auto hubs. Swapped them over to manual hubs and haven't had a problem since.
