My 93 with 106K is running fine, but is it necessary or recommended to change the timing change as preventive maintenance? I have been told 93s have a timing chain tensioner which keeps the chain within specs. Is this correct? Would appreciate hearing from someone with experience. Thanks Mike

I don't have experience with timing chains, but it is my understanding that timing chains on Explorers should last the life of the engine. It's not like a timing belt that you have to worry about changing.

Not necessarily. Over time they do stretch and begin to make a knocking sound. Even chains have to be replaced sometimes. My is in the beginning stages of knocking right now at ~90,000 miles.

If you're not having any problems with it, I wouldn't worry about changing it unless you have the water pump off and you're already right at it.
