I don't post on here much, but I do spend a lot of time browsingB-)

My 98 explorer sport 4.0 ohv has developed a rough idle and finally popped a code for random missfires on 1 and 3. I pressure tested each cylinder at tdc and noticed bubbling in the coolant reservoir. My number 1 plug was cracked and number 3 was covered in oil. (Bad guide smokes at start up). What sucks is that I just carfaxed my truck and it's always been serviced up to 105k. I bought it with 126k and it now has 142k. I flushed the coolant and there was no trace of contamination and I also replaced the rocker arms/pushrods and noticed zero sludge. The engine looked brand new:'(
This was all done before the idling problem of course..

I just ordered new heads, gasket kit, and a delta RV cam. I am hoping that everything turns out nice. I am an ase certified tech so this should be a breeze.

your on the right track definatly dude good luck

Thanks. I will post teardown, and installation pics for everyone. I will be pulling it apart sometime next week. It's still running and getting me to and from for now. I was under the assumption that the 98tm heads were casted thicker then the earlier heads??

where did you buy them from?

I bought the heads from clear water cylinder heads. The gaskets were pieced together from rockauto. I just finished up installing the cam, and am now waiting for my new sealed power rocker arms and luxuries to show up. I installed the delta rocker kit last winter and they are all chewed up, so they are trash. Hopefully this truck will be back on the road this weekend
