Hi to all,

I want to grease my drive-train in my '97 Sport and I'm not sure of what kind of grease to use. I've read that you shouldn't mix grease's of different "soap types" whatever that means. I don't know what is currently in there. Does anybody have any advise on that. Also, how many fittings do I need to grease under there and where are they?

thanks in advance!

On a 97, there's nothing to grease except to clean
and grease the gear linkage to the auto transmission.

The drive trains probably have the original sealed u-joints that can NOT be greased.

I recently replaced all 3 u-joints on my 98 Sport with greaseable U joints--some people say the greaseable ones are not as strong, but I don't do much off-the-road driving so it didn't matter to me. Besides, I like grease.

I doubt the u-joints are bad (yet) on a 97--I just like to mess with my 98 Sport.

Just put the Sport up on stands, use the creeper to get around underneath and take a good look around--get to know your vehicle.

enjoy!

How many miles does your 97 have? I would not be worreied about the U joints, but i would consider replacing the transfercase fluid and if it has near 100,000 miles consider the front and rear differential fluid change. i put synthetic in my T-case and differentials at 100K.
Good luck!

Hi and thanks for the feedback!

I've got 89k on it. It's a 5 speed not an automatic so maybe there's some things to look into there. I haven't been under it for a close look yet, I just assumed that it would have grease fittings all over like my '84 Jeep CJ-7 does. Also, I will look into the synthetic t-case and differential lube. It's getting near 100k already, so I'm sure that it could use the attention.

thanks again!

Ok, I thought I heard that someone was "greasing their Sport" in here....I was concerned.

kidakat,
I used Amsoil synthetics in my truck. The T-case takes ATF. I forget what thinkness the fluid was for the axles. I will check for you.

This morning on the way into work my 97 Sport turned 80,000 miles! They are correck, there isn't any grease fitting anywhere on a stock 97 Sport. I have Changed my Rear Diff oil, Tranny Oil, Serp Belt. Next will be the Radiator Hose's and Thermostat, transfer case oil, Maybe U-Joints...

Does that apply to '96 also? If so, why do dealers charge ya for chasis lube??

Cause the delaers like to make it sound like they are doing a lot so they can charge a lot. The only real grease point is the trans selector ball stud and shaft.

Hey there 95XLT!

Thanks for the info! I'll check back here to see if you post again on what the viscosity of the oil you use is.

later,

kidakat
