1991 ford explorer sport.
My little 91 sport was high geared anyways (3.55) so you can imagine how mopey it became with the new 31/10's I bought today! I've been researching this for a while and haven't really came up with an answer that best suits my driving conditions so I'm now I'm here asking advice, it's a grocery getter a family vehicle aswell as something that will see off road occasionally... I forgot to mention it's the m5od so no slush box issues, what would be the best all around gearing for me? I don't fear the gear by any means I just don't want to tach out at 60mph, I'll also pull a smaller tandem axle trailer on occasion. Thankyou

I found a really cool chart before on here, I'm sure you could find it with a quick search, but on my first gen with 31's the stock 3.73 I can live with, but Occasionally I wish I could regear. So if I were you, I'd go with 3.9? or 4.10. If you want more torque, go higher

What rpm range at 70mph is best as far as being in the power band? That would be good to know when looking at that chart

My stock Ranger (Level II) is a 4.0 SOHC 5 speed with 4.10 axle ratio and 31s. It is a great set up for my use. The engine runs about 2,500 rpm at 70 mph. It will lite up the rear tires if I want it to. I get 16 to 20 mpg normal driving.

With that size tire, 4.56 is probably too much. You won't tach out at 60- 70 or so will tend to be your top speed. I had 30s and 4.56 and 70 just seemed to be the right speed. I was tacked out, but that speed just seemed/felt/heard to be the top speed.

4.56 with 33s is like 4.10 with stock tires.

4.10 is you never plan to go larger on tires size.you can also pick up a whole 2nd gen rear axle at junk yard for cheap.gets you 4.10 and disc breaks.

Yeah and I could probably find one with a locker aswell, the first gear in this m5od just seems really high like you're taking off in second gear, will 4.10's help with that?

It will make a huge difference going from 3.55 to 4.10

mind=blown. Why have I never realised this that sounds like the PERFECT upgrade for me. Assuming the second gens rear axle is still an 8.8 with 31 spline axles?

Not to hijack the thread or anything :p.

My manual 4.6l mustang has 4.10's and I LOVE them, I wouldn't go lower (numerically) unless I was going supercharged.

Yes its the same axle just with disc.I would go opposite and did for my supercharger ranger.I was going to go with 4.10 but went with 3.73 instead.sc have tq down low, you dont really need gears that have you running at high rpms or that help you outa the hole.you would go thro gears so fast and shifts would put you high in the rpms range, not in the sweet spot for a sc...now turbo I would go opposite, to keep the turbo spooled.

EDIT sory didnt see your ""(numerically)"" part..yea we said same thing then;)
