My 99 Explorer SOHC is at the dealer for constant engine noise/rattling. I have 85K miles. Service manager said they need to replace the timing cassette in the front for $1400. At 57K miles I had 00M12 done. Now it appears I need the 08-2-1 done, does anyone have details on TSB 08-2-1. Of course it is out of warranty. Just looking for suggestions with how to approach the dealer and any feedback this forum can give. Thanks

1999-2002 EXPLODERS, EXPLO SPORT TRC, EXPLOD Sport AND RANGERS - Mountaineers
ISSUE-
Some vehicles eqipped w/4.0L SOHC may exhibit a Pri Timing Chain Noise. Audible during Hot and Cold engine operation. Predominantly found on cold engines under acceleration (2400-2500RPM). This may be caused by Pri Timing Chain Tensioner system.
ACTION -
Replace the Primary Timing Chain Tensioner, Chain guide, Jackshaft and Crankshaft sprocket. This is a kit.
FOR ALL RANGERS USE KIT 2U3Z-6D265-BA (non balance shaft engines).

good luck!

when they did the 00M12, did the do the 01M01 too? You should be under warranty for that one still - Pretty sure it was extension to 100K

No you shouldnt. Been there, done that. My total was $1300 with a new oil pressure send unit and my 45k checkup. Here is my page 1 of the invoice.

The best I can say is it seems to fix the problem pretty well. It also took them one week.

I just noticed you are from florida. If you are in tampa, is it Bill Currie Ford?

nweibley, Thanks for the reply, my car is at Freedom Ford in Clearwater. Little irritated they can not provide any assistance with this; I bought it from them brand new, had all my service done and repairs over the years, total of $2500+ with them. I will never recommend them as their service dept has always caused me headaches. I am buying a 04 F150 crew cab in the fall and will be shopping at another dealer.

I reccomend Gator Ford. Its realtively near us, and people say they are absolutley outstanding... plus they only sell large Fords... trucks mostly, and some SUVs... so they are right up our alley. Just giving you heads up.
