timing chain broke or bad crank/cam sensor????

i just purchased a 98 ford explorer 4x4 eb edition. guy said the timing chain broke but hes not for sure. he said he was driving it and it just quit no noise or vibration. ive been told its the timing chain or the crank/cam sensor. any ideas???

a simple compression test on both side will quickly tell you if you have mechanical problems.

Take the valve covers off and have a look?
