1998 4.0 SOHC Eddie Bauer
Hey guys new here, i tried search feature and manual searching. I hope this isnt a re-post. That being said, i recently bought a 98 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 V6. Timing Chain started rattling shortly after buying the truck. Before becoming a member i browsed forums here about this issue, seemed to be common with this model truck. Many here said start small and work your way up until problem is fixed, well i work on computers for a living (opposite end away from mechanical work =P) so taking it to a mechanic seemed to be my only route.
Once the truck was there they ruined the engine (by replacing the tensioner arm and oil pump but not the timing chain like idiots). This is just my guess, long story short they've dropped 2 engines in and cant "figure out how to make it run" quote/un-quote. Went from 4.0 to 3.0. From what Ive gathered they've converted wiring harnesses. I asked if they have re calibrated the computer in it for the new 3.0 (different air/fuel ration? different settings?) They said "the ford dealership said it should all work the way it is"
Bringing me to my question. My dad has helped me pay them to get it fixed, weve paid 1200 total parts and labor, and its been nearly 3 months. I do believe these shadetree meekanix will not be able to get the truck going.... I want to cry (baby due in Oct) and i have no clue what to do =(

1) The timing chain does not need to be replaced to fix the rattle. It's usually just the tensioner.
2) Why did they replace the oil pump?
3) 4.0 to 3.0? What does this mean?

I seriously think you need to find another mechanic to get the truck running. This sounds like a complete mess.

4.0L to 3.0L?

Either you have misunderstood what the mechanics are telling you or they are being extremely unethical. Are you saying that they are attempting to replace your 4.0L SOHC engine with a Ranger 3.0L OHV engine? If so, it's time to take them to court. There's no way that a 3.0L engine can adequately power your 4300 pound Explorer. Also, they are destroying any resale value your vehicle might have had.

The SOHC V6 is a complicated engine and qualified mechanics are required to service it properly. The shop that has had your Explorer for three months and is destroying it obviously is employing incompetent mechanics. Explain to the owner of the shop that you are going to hire a lawyer and sue them for damages. I would not pay them another cent.

Oh, so this is the whole story.....I thought it was bought that way. I would definitely tell them to get it back to its factory state with the 4.0 or take them to court. Like I said that 3.0 is too underpowered for your truck. The 4.0 OHV would have been ok to swap in just not the 3.0.
