Tin Roof Rain noise.

If you check the 'sticky' on TSB's at the beginning of this Forum, you will see that there is a Technical Services Bulletin on this issue and what it calls for.
I have the same noise but so far have decided against having anything done about it. If you read through this thread you will see that some have had the work done with no change in the noise and others have had it done with all kinds of problems. That is why I cancelled my appontment to have the TSB carried out a while ago.

Peter

I am a big fan of this TSB when performed properly.

Cory. My rain noise problem is fixed. My dealer performed the TSB and after driving through a thunderstorm the ping-ping of large raindrops is gone. Thanks for all your help through this forum.

Yes, you are very lucky. The "fix" did absolutely nothing for our car.

I'm happy to hear that you had some luck in getting the noise reduced. You are one of the very few that has noticed a noise reduction.
As for the headliner, if they followed the TSB instructions, there would have been no need to remove it. From my understanding in reading the TSB, access to the area is gained by removing the sun visor and inserting a nozzle throught the sun visor mounting cup.

Peter

The headliner was definately down, as the guy who the dealer sublet the work to forgot to reconnect the side curtain airbag. The guy had experience with the removal/installation with a few others, so I wasn't worried about it getting messed up. It eliminated 95% of the noise, so I'm happy.

Hi Guys my 2012 Explorer Limited w/dual sunroofs has the tin can sound when driving in the rain too...
Welcome to the forum, floridaob. I’m happy to lend a hand by escalating the details up to your regional Customer Service Manager. Please send me a PM with your contact information, approximate mileage, VIN, and dealer name/state.

Peter,

I recommend calling the Ford of Canada Customer Relationship Centre @ 1-800-565-3673 to let them document the concern.

...The rain noise has been reduced significantly, and I have noticed no issues with how the headliner was taken down/replaced.

Noisy roof 2011 XLT

I had a 2011 XLT ( no moon roof ). When it rained it sounded like I was in a tin building.

When driving at highway speeds, the ceiling mounted bluetooth was very noisy due to wind on the roof, according to people I was talking to.

1. Did anyone else notice this?

2. How is the 2013 (non moonroof ) vehicles?

The 'tin roof' noise is a known issue with the early models and there have been many posts on it. There is also a TSB for it although I have elected to not have it done due to the problems some owners encountered with the work done.

I have never had any complaints about wind noise on my calls and I'm using just a plain non smart cell phone with QWERTY keyboard. I also don't notice any wind noise from the roof and I have the dual panel moonroof.

Tin Roof

Good to know they fixed it. I was prepared to pull the headliner and install Dynamat when I get my Sport. Sounds like I won't have to.

I hope they fixed it. Some of the members that had the TSB done stated that it didn't make any difference in the noise. Perhaps they did a better job on the 2013's on the line. Like I mentioned, I never had the TSB done on mine and have gone through rainy conditions without a problem. Have only heard a loud 'ping' a couple of times.

Hi CobraJohn,

Do you still have your 2011 XLT? Have you been to your dealership so they can take a look?

If you're still experiencing this concern, I'm happy to step in and get your case escalated to your region's customer service manager. Send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name. I'll get your information into the right hands and ensure that someone contacts you soon.

Thanks for your quick response on this. I have never been on a forum where the Mfg gets involved to resolve issues. That is great customer care.

I sold the Explorer about 3 months ago. I plan to buy a 2014 Black Sport as soon as they are available. Do you know when the 2014 order book will be open?

Until then I am driving my 15 year old son's future 2002 Super-Duty 7.3 Powerstroke. He will take over the Super-Duty on July 1st so I have to be in my new Sport by then.

I also have my 2003 Cobra.....love those Fords :-)

2012 was a short model year and the 2013's were available earlier than usual. I wouldn't expect the 2014 models to come out until the Fall, but I've been wrong before.;)

This is one repair that our dealer actually got right on our Explorer. The Bluetooth was almost unusable because of background noise. The tin roof noise from rain falling on the car was so loud that everyone who heard it commented on it. After the TSB came out and we mentioned it again the dealer injected the fusion foam and everything was immediately better. The call quality over the phone is 100% better and now rain doesn't sound like a million BB's falling from the sky. Now if our car could just stop wetting itself all would be good.
