I recently had 5% tint put on my '92 explorer. Due to the pre-tinted glass in the rear of the vehicle, the tint put on in the rear does not match the front. Have any of you had tint put on your vehicle? And if so, is there any way to fix this without having to replace the glass? Thanks.

Is the pre tinted glass in the rear of the truck black or is it that mirror stuff? If it's black I would either take that 5% off the front and put 30% or 35% inplace of it. Or you could probably put 35% over the factory tinted glass in the rear and it would probably be pretty close. Go to a window tinting shop, they're usually pretty good about matching it.

Dude... sorry to tell you, but unless you have "black" stock tint in teh back, you're screwed. I went through this whole ordeal earlier in the year, my '93 has the tinted glass in the back, but it's the reflective kind, so no matter what you do it won't match regular window tint.

I went to a local shop, and this is what they came up with. They might be able to CLOSELY MATCH the front tint, by laying a layer of silver reflective, then another layer of bronze tint. But they'd have to special order it, because it's industrial use, and not made for cars. I ended up deciding that when I had the money, I'd just buy clear glass, or swap my glass with plexiglass (at least it'd be lighter) and then tint it.

Good Luck. Do some searching to, you'll come across a few threads with the information.

I was afraid of that...do you know how much it would cost to switch out the glass?

tried "pull-a-part" ?? the ones that i have been to have got glass for dirt cheap ( like if you wanted to buy a whole dash... $35-40 cheap !) ........

not sure if you "uplanders" have one in tenn. , but if you don't have one there then maybe a days drive for you but it think the one in norcross g.a. will be the shortest one to you .anywhere else you can expect to pay for the glass at almost top dollar ...not at "pap" ......it's a wonder that they can sell the stuff and makea profit with as many people i've seen working there .

btw:: don't worry about the uplander remark...were the uplanders to florida !:p: lol

Hey I just noticed your located in tennessee. Where exactly in TN are you?
In memphis there's two pull-a-parts and one LKQ auto salvage and a whole lot of small junkyards scattered about.

Go to pull-a-part and look around. There's normally at least one explorer that has clear glass.

I was just going to do it myself pretty much, I wasn't to worried about the rear windshield, but more about the rear quarter panel glass, but I think it'd just be a matter of having a few friends help you out and taking your time.

I just looked on pullapart.com, and "Door Glass - Bare" is 11.48. So if you can find an explorer with intact glass, you can probably get the glass you need for about 80 bucks or less. They might charge more for the bigger pieces.

It's possible, just the hardest part is finding the non tinted glass.
