Well, I have found a new problem to ponder. My 94 XLT needs a new set 4 tires. The existing set of Champion AT's have had just about enough. I went to the owners manual and it states, "USE OF ALL TERRAIN TIRES IS ACCEPTABLE AND DO NOT USE ALL SEASON TIRES". The kid at the tire store shows me what his computer says I need for my truck and they are all season. When I told him what my manual says, he says that because of the roll over crapola attached to the all terrains, they now have to put on the all season. I was really wanting to put on a set of BFG AT's. Can anyone help out and give me the right scoop?
Thanks.

I have run BFGs in my '93 Explorer for 10+years.. When my Explorer was stock I ran BFG AT KOs 30x9.5x15 and they are very durable and performed great. After lifting my truck I run BFG AT KOs 33x12.5x15 and they are equally as great. Thousands of people run these tires in Explorers.. As you have already noted due to liability issues many manufactures and tire installation shops have very short list of approved tires to put on your vehicle... If you can't get a shop to install them on your Explorer you can always drop off just the old tires and have the new ones mounted.. Just a little extra work having to leave your exporer on jack stands in your drive way while the shop mounts your new tires.

Actually, your tire guy has it backwards. The 91-94's call for ALL-TERRAIN tires to AVOID rollovers, since most all-season tires have more grip on pavement and would be likely to cause a rollover where an all-terrain would just slip. Really, either is fine, as high performance tires are what's needed to really have extreme grip that would give big time rollover potential. BFG All Terrains are just fine for an Explorer, and they were one of the tires specifically mentioned by Ford Motor Co. as an acceptable replacement for the Firestones during the whole tire/rollover fiasco.

Thanks all for your help guys, your awesome. Funny how you know the right answer but need just a bit of re-assurance to put you over.

yeah, I like how a lot of the Ford manuals say don't air down for driving over deep sand too...now there's wisdom...
