What is the max pressure stamped onto the tire? I run my BFG ATs at 45psi and they are rated for 50psi... I would agree that 50psi is too high in any regard.

Iam a dummy there supposed to be 50 psi but there at like 65

As you increase pressure in your tire (up to max pressure) the ride will become harsher, but the tire last longer. Therefore it becomes an issure of personal preferance. You can start at the highter ressure and drive arround a bit. If the ride is too rough them drop it down a few psi and retest...

Higher tire pressure will not make your tires last longer.. the correct tire pressure will give you make tire life and that varies from vehicle to vehicle. If you run your tires at to high a pressure the center of tire will basically balloon out and the center will wear out faster than the rest of the tire. Basically the samething happens when you run to low a tire pressure, the center of the tire will basically start curling in and the outsides of the tire will wear faster. You can do what's called the "chalk test" basically color in some of the lugs on all 4 tires and then drive foward 100ft in a straight line. If more chalk is worn on in the center you know your tire pressure is to high, if its worn off more on the outsides, tire pressure is to low. How ever this test will really only work on new tires, if your tires are worn unevenly you won't get accurate results.

I dont think they should be anywhere above 35- check the sticker on the side
of the door jamb. The max inflation on the side of the tire means absolutely nothing in relation to the use on the vehicle. Check your owners manual or the door sticker.

High inflation wont be good for tire or vehicle wear, braking, cornering, traction in general- rain driving will be more difficult for sure.

30-35 is the correct pressures for the 92s depending on load and tire size.
45-50 psi is going to pound the vehicle and it's occupants.

On aftermarket tires the pressure is not always the same as the stock. My stock says 26, but my tires look low with anything less than 30. 50 does seem really high though. Doug's right about the wear also.

Sorry If my prior post was confussing.. I should have wrote under inflated tires will wear out faster than Correctly inflated tires. My bfgs are correctly inflated between 40-45psi depending on load.

ford made a refinement to any door sticker that said 26 psi due to the problem ford made with firestone..... they actually sent out letters to owners that they tracked via VIN# and DMV saying 26 is wrong and it should be no less than 30 PSI

for general suv use, 32-35 is sufficient... however i know that some vehicles require more or less... i worked on a land rover at work and the door sticker said 28 psi in the front and 46 in the rear... odd, but i didnt design the truck or the spec, and hte tires were rated for max 50 psi cold.... so thats what i put in the customers car

IMO the PSI has no business being over 40 with stock tires on an Explorer.

.... then you usually haul a helluva load on yours. My BFGs chalk tested 10+ lbs less than that on my Explorer.

My first set of BFGs lasted over 55K miles @ 40psi... :)

gjarret, how accurate is that chalk test!?? What kind of tires are u running? And that whole buisness of 26psi is crazy!! who on here ran that pressure w/ the stock set up?

I did- ran my first set of ATX tires to 70k miles, my second set of ATXs to about 50k before swapping in some Goodyears. I ran them at 26 psi unless I was on summer vacation with a full load- then moved them up to 35 or so.

My 31" GYs I ran at 28 or so got 40k miles from them before I sold it.

My wifes VW tire placcard has pressures for various loads and speeds, I think 4 combinations of load and road conditions. I try to follow them a best I can- 70k miles on her Michelin's.

Auto makers design the vehicle as a complete package- tire pressure is related to braking, traction, ride and handling, wear and noise- engineers with way more experience than I put the stuff together and there's few reasons to deviate from their suggestions. Once you modifiy a vehicle you have to start again though which much less resources to figure out the proper pressure- hence the chalk test.

I always went by what the tire itself said, the tires I have on the X now only have a max rating, I think its like 50-55 psi, right now I have them at 36 psi. I was even thinking of airing up to 40 psi.

Ok so I should lose a few pounds but who doesn't? :D My BFGs were the 30x9.5 size and I sure that make a difference.
