I have a 1998 & 2006 Explorers. I have always used Michelin LTX M&S tires. I need new tires on the 98'. I am replacing them, not because of wear, but cracking. Tires are about 5 years. I don't want to spend $200.00 a piece. Does anyone have any suggestions about an inexpensive good tire I could change to. Car has 213,000 miles on it & I don't drive as much as I use to. I buy my tires at Bjs. Best warranty out there.

Minor sidewall cracking, especially around the rim lip where the tire flexes a lot, especially when underinflated, isn't a cause for concern. Obviously it'd be nice if tires never did this but sometimes they do. I've had other Michelins do this too, they must have had a compound or molding issue at some point. You don't need to spend money on new cheap tires when you have a set of LTX M/S that have plenty of tread and just have a cosmetic issue.

If the cracking is more than minor, you should be able to get them replaced under the prorated warranty at BJ's, you'll get whatever the percentage of tread remaining is as a percentage of what you paid back, towards the purchase of new tires. You could wait until Michelin is doing another $70 rebate on 4 tires and buy 4 new LTX M/S2, do the warranty return, and then use that and get another 70 off.

Otherwise just go into BJ's sometime or look online and see what tires they stock in the size you need. You can always ask them about whether the cracking would be covered under warranty when you're shopping or checking out new tires as well.

Thank you for your input. The cracking is on the outside of the tire tread. Thanks for the info. I will go to Bjs
