After years of being out of the Explorer game, I came across a deal that I just couldn't pass up. Its a 2002 XLS with a manual transmission. All the windows work, the AC is good, and the body and interior are in decent shape. The rear window panel isnt even cracked which I thought was impossible!

The bad: the motor has the rear timing chain issue that plagues the 4.0. It still runs and drives, but I'm sure it will not be long before it goes. Being 2wd, I'm not sure that its exactly what I am looking for but it fit the budget nicely.

So I'm at a crossroads. Do I replace the motor and build it out for a fun spare? Do I sell it and look for another project that is a little more road worthy?

No money in selling it. No money in keeping it.

You didn't mention the mileage. If it's low, pull engine and repair before you lose the engine.

220k on the motor. Either way I'm probably OK. Just looking for some suggestions

I paid $1600 for my '02 XLS that had 98K miles on it and then spent another $600 fixing various issues and it runs like a champ. Do you want a better optioned Explorer, or do you like the 5 spd which is rather rare?
Personally with as cheap as these are, I would sell and find a better starting point with much less miles.
