...that is the question :)

I'm fitting a new JL 8W1v2.4 into a stock 8" factory sub enclosure driven by a Sound Storm 2F400 amp. Should I polyfill the inside of the enclosure? There was a bunch of jute padding in there, but I can stuff some better polyfill in there that I didn't use on my seats...

From what I read, the space inside is tuned ok for the JL, so if I'm in spec or to the larger end of spec for enclosure volume, I shouldn't need polyfill. But, I figured I'd bounce it off the experts instead of the Klaus website... :D

To give you the generic answer:

Unless the enclosure is close-to, or smaller than, the required volume, you shouldn't need polyfill.

However, that doesn't mean you can't use it to try and get a little more enclosure volume by adding some polyfill - just don't go overboard, as the law of diminishing returns does exist here. I'm a fan of polyfill, as it's done well by me in the past, but many (myself included) don't recommend it for ported enclosures - only sealed. Then again, I'm by no means an expert, just a former enthusiast. Good luck.

is it a 3rd gen or which truck or Sub enclosure

what squirrelmaster said. . .
on my 3rd gen i removed the batting and used half or a little more of 20oz bag bought at Michael's, pillow stuffing. I think that works out to 1lb for 0.5ft sealed enclosure. In reading i might have used to much not sure??? I also had some extra Dynomat which i used on the outside. It sounds good/great but i'm no expert. I mounted a 10" in the stock enclosure if that matters.

It's in my '97, I'm putting in a 2000 Mounty Enclosure.

Good link, Jim- thanks!

I just left that jute stuff in my exclosure. I would have pulled that, and put poly in, but I had none at the time. I pry will experiment with some in the future.

I have used poly in all the enclosures I have had. Some of my friends tried to go without, but in every case, they did not sound "right". Not sure of the term, but it sounded "hollow". In one case, there was a pair of Pioneer subs, with no poly. You could see the subs heavy excursion, but bass output was barely there. Like when subs are getting a frequency below their range, but moving. We tore open a pillow, put some poly in, and then the subs hit like a ****. Better than expected results from some mystery low-end Pioneer subs.

Well I got everything hooked up tonight, sounds good. But, I'm going to try the poly- I need to run the input too high to get decent bass response, so I think it could use some poly. It does sound nice though. I like the combo for $160 including the JL sub, the amp, and the install kit... Killer deal...

i have a ED e3 12 sub in a 1 cu ft sealed box. I used 2 lbs of poly fill in it. It sounds great. Good & tight with plenty of volume for just 1 sub.
