I have a 2004 4.0L. I have this really loud squeal/rubbing sound when driving above about 2300 rpms. Problem started when the weather got cooler. It sounds like a bad bearing sound. I have swapped out the belt tensioner, belt and idler pulley to no avail. Took the X to the stealership for their expert opinion. They changed the alternator, the tensioner and the belt. Yes 2 of those things I replaced less than 1000 miles ago. Thats another story with the dealer.... Anyway, after searching this site it appears that this could be the timing chain tensioner. I thought this problem was to be corrected in post 2002 models, am I wrong? How the heck did you get someone to diagnose this problem. Ive dumped over $700 into this problem thanks the the stealership and its not fixed. I think they just replaced parts to make money since they are hurting. I took it to a reputable independant shop and they thought it was the tranny. Not sure I agree. This noise is eally annoying, sounds like a moving piece rubbing on plastic while accelerating thru gears. Any thoughts? or should I just turn the radio up louder.

Sounds like timing chain tensioners to me. They did not fix the problem in the later years, they can still get noisy. Once they start getting squeeling loud, you are on borrowed time. Mine only make the faint rattle for the first few miles on a frozen morning. Its not so bad since I went back to Ford oil filters. The Wix filter had the wrong bypass/drainback valves and caused all kinds of cold weather noises. Replacing the front one doesnt look so bad, but the back.....
