im gonna be cleaning my kkm this weekend and im wondering what i should do if i accidentally over-oil the filter? (yes i tried a search but only came up with one answer; id like a few more options possibly.) i know i spoke to someone in the chat room last week about this, but i forget who and i forget what they told me :p

so, how do you guys remove excess oil from a kkm?

also, is there anyway to tell if i over-oiled it other than putting it on the truck and seeing if it idles rough?...if not, and i put it back on and the truck idles roughly, am i gonna have to clean the mas, too?

thanks guys (and girls.)

yeah, i know you dirty *******, but i want some useful input from some intelligent people ;)

I just sprayed the oil into each pleat, starting with the one where it is put together so I'd know where I started. Then I sprayed around the top and bottom ends of the pleats again just to be sure. I let it dry and touched up any light colored spots that I missed. Worked fine.

No definite technique. Just use your own judgement and don't go overboard with the spraying. Remember, you can always go back and touch it up if you don't spray enough.

Do I count as intelligent? ;)

well, that seems like a pretty reasonable answer; however, intelligence has yet to be seen, j/k ;)

i know what im asking for is hypothetical, but i just wanna know what to do as soon as it happens, rather than have it happen, and then post and wait and wait and wait before i get an answer.

thanks, john.

tbomb,
I have a K&N drop-in, but when I get too much oil on the filter, I use guass (spelling?), the stuff you get in first aid kits. Just gently poke it inbetween the pleets of the filter, and let it say there for a couple of hours. It will wick up the oil.
I check my filter with air to see if I have too much. Put it on a piece of paper, with something to just hold it slightly off the paper, to allow air flow, and blow air from about a 2 feet away and see if the paper gets oil on it. Don't blast it with a hard stream of air, I use about 20 psi to check it out. It works for me.

how often should these things be cleaned?I have no idea how old this post is.. someone gave me the url.

my kkm is sorta.. black heh, I haven't cleand it since I got it and I'm thinking it could be part of not all of my problems.

I will be cleaning it soon, was thinking bout picking up the k&n cleaning kit?

should I reset the computer after cleaning?

Well here's my high tech method to check for/remove excess oil. I have a flat K+N, and after spraying on the oil, I gently whack the filter flat on a few sheets of newspaper spread on the floor.

Told you it was high tech!

well, i think k&n (even though we're talking kkms here - theyre the same thing) says to clean their filters like every 50k, but screw that ;) i clean mine every 1 year/15k. it was really easy to do. its actually hard to over oil it, unless you completely saturate it. you can see where theres oil and where theres not. youll see what i mean when you do it. mine was so dirty, that my gas mileage was terrible, but when i cleaned the filter, it picked it back up to normal again; thats how dirty it was, heh.

nah, you dont have to reset the computer, but resetting the computer never hurt anything, so you can if you want.

oh, and, yeah, the k&n cleaning kit is fine for the kkm. thats what i used since its easier to find than the kkm kit and its the same thing anyway.

good luck.

Yeah, just make sure you get an even red color over the entire fabric area. I wouldn't want the oil to be dripping off, but other than that I've never worried about over-oiling.

While we are on the subject. I have 2 kits, and plenty of oil left, but no cleaner. Can't I just use a Simple Green, 409, White Lightinng as a substitute ? These clean and de-grease or is the K&N 'gauze' too sensitive to these cleaners ??
Oh, and after an 'over-oiling' incident that tripped my CEL (MAS gunked up). I take some Bounty and stuff it inside the cone (my type) and spray it on let it sit for awhile (while I reset the PCM and clean the MAS) and it's good to go. I do this every oil change, while i'm wating for the pan to drain...

I just cleaned mine and reset the computer. the process wasn't bad.. and the filter was even red, but not so much as it was leaving a residue on my hand. I put it in and cranked the thing up. It was running so smooth..

I let it idle for 10 minutes and then drove it granny-style around the neighborhood hitting no more than 2000 rpm on an accel. it was idling so smooth and running so quiet I thought it had shut off at one point.

I'll do a realistic driving test later tonight maybe, if this doesn't fix my problems.. then it will be computer diagnostics time.

Pretty hard to over-oil it....

....considering that on a 98 Explorer SOHC the freaking valve vent discharges right into the plenum after the MAF. I cleaned out a teaspoon of motor oil when I pulled the air tube. Couldn't believe how much gunk was in there after 66K.

That's why I don't buy the mfg warnings about "oil saturated air filters" and such. Sheesh.

well if i read these posts correctly it appears that over oil saturation can cause an idleing problem which is the question i was going to post my rig has been idleing rough since i cleaned my filter i was in a bit of a hurry and i supposed i may have negleted to give proper carte to all the steps ie drying and then oiling. So has any one esle experienced this idleing issue feels like to truck is going to stall or creep out the hold of the brakes anyway any imput would be great.

tahnks
