I am ready to put tranny back in 1994 exp with auto and i want to get converter in all the way and it seems like it is but it sounds like it is not or it is to far and rubbing on the trans any tricks to getting in all the way it looks like it is but it sounds like it is rubbing or not linning up with splins

This may be your problem..A common problem is the input shaft is in backwards. The splines look the same on each end but are different. The short spline end goes in the trans, long end goes in the torque converter.
 






Here it is installed correctly.

not sure what the conversion is but i got 14/32nds and the shaft is correct it sounds like the back of tc is rubbin on the tranny but i can not see any rub marks i even tried to get the tc back in the old trany and it sounds the same i think i am just not getting it all the way in i can here what sounds like the splines trying to line up in both trannys but i just can not get it that last little bit i have done severa; trannys in my time and never had this problem ive even tried a littile hair

I just checked the shaft it is all good i can not believe i can not get the damd thing to slide into place i have tried three different torqe convereters and not luck yet maybe im just getting to frustraed never had this problem befor

ok i done the conversion it comes out to .437 which if im not mistaken is within your specs but it sounds like it is not in so my question is have you ever herd one make noise like it was rubbing both the replacement tranny and the old tranny make the same sound. sorry for sounding so stupid but it is getting the best of me right now
 






I know on GM 4L60E the converter pulls back a quarter inch or so towards the flex plate when the bolts are installed, so it will rub a bit until then.

Not that I remember. Did you use an alignment tool, to align the pump before tightening the bolts? If the pump is misaligned the gears will make noise. I only say this because I don't know what you have done or are doing? Are you sure the O ring inside the small pump gear has not come out of the groove and is being pushed into the bottom. I have a 5R55E setting in my garage, I can check it later and let you know.
drdoom is correct, they do move forward some when connected to the flex plate.

The 4ALD doesn't have an O ring in the small pump gear.
 






Do you have the ATSG manual? Page 116 says on the right in one of the CAUTIONS-- Make sure the converter hub is fully engaged in the front pump support and gear and rotates freely. Do not damage the hub seal.

Sorry that is for the 5R55E, I forgot it was a 94 trans, I will check A4LD manual.

Page 43 of the A4LD ATSG manual says in a NOTE -- Make sure the converter is not bound up and rotates freely. The dimension of the pilot below the surface of the bell hsg. is the same.
 






Try standing the trans with the bell hsg upward with the converter in place, this will better align the converter, it may be rubbing because it is tilting to the side when lying down. Support on the case and not the output shaft.
If BrooklynBay sees this he may have a better answer as he knows more about the A4LD than I do.
 






I'm no expert - never even replaced a TC, but Chilton's has this to say FWIW:

"Proper installation of the converter requires full engagement of the converter hub in the pump gear. To accomplish this, the converter must be pushed and at the same time rotated through what feels like 2 notches or bumps. When fully installed, rotation of the converter will usually result in a clicking noise heard, caused by the converter surface touching the housing to case bolts. This should not be a concern, but an indication of proper converter installation since, when the converter is attached to the engine flywheel, it will be pulled slightly forward away from the bolt heads. Besides the clicking sound, the converter should rotate freely with no binding."

ok guys

here's my update. I stood tranny on end and still got the rubbing noise but the mesurement comes out to 0.469, also if i pull tc out just a tad i can hear the fluid moving in the tc and no rub so i slid tranny into place and it went pretty easy, i have to work for the next few days so i will keep everyone informed i have just never heard a tc sound like it was rubbing i just done a C-6 and had no problems but i will keep everyone informed and thanks for the measuments i would not have tried putting it in without knowing that it was within them measurments.

Thank you bk that is exactly what is happening i have the tranny on the motor now and it pulled in just fine, and it the motor turns over just fine it is weird that i have never heard of this rubbing before and i have done a lot of tranny's just never a A4Ld or explorer again thanks to you and everyone for the quick replies this is a great place for help.
