Does anyone happen to know the torque specifications for the bolts that hold the front and rear calipers on a 1998 4wd Sport?

The caliper mounting bolt tqs are:
front 21-26 ft/lbs
rear 20 ft/lbs

Can anything happen if you over-torque them? I always just put them really tight.

overtightening probably ok

Quote from my Mechanical Engineering Design book (Robert Shigley):

"The proof load of a bolt is the maximum tensile load a bolt can withstand without incurring permanent set...Using high quality bolt materials...such as SAE Grade 3 or better ... if the loads are static, the minimum preload should be 90 percent of the proof load. ....the bolt will retain its load carrying capacity no matter how high the pre-tension...if such a bolt does not fail during tightening, there is a very good chance that it will never fail! "

Translation: you are probably ok if you didn't strip the threads

Caliper bolts don't need to be torqued. Its only important that they are tight.

Thanks Bashman - I did all to 25 ft lbs last night - guess I'll have to back the rear bolts off a bit.:redexp:

Don't worry about backing them off, it will not hurt anything to leave them the way they are.
