I also noticed a very nice 9,000 mile limited on the lot, nav, DVD, etc.

The only issue that I have is it did not carry the tow package. (and that it may be a rental car lease return)

Question is, what is involved in upgrading to the equivilent of the tow package? Is it just a frame mounted hitch and a 7 pin connector? I am hoping that I would not have to install tranny or oil coolers.

Thanks again

I would appreciate the answer to the same question. What does the factory "tow package" include? If it is just class III vs class II receiver, then has anyone change their out (ie...I hope they aren't welded on like some other trucks)?

towing package is a class III hitch and 7 pin connector. If it is a V6 then it also adds a 3.73 rear axle. The Hitches are welded to the frame.

wow...welded? great for rigidity....bad for me swapping it out without getting the grinder out.

On the older X's the package included upgraded cooling (tranny, oil, and power steering...if I recall).....any difference like this on the new models?

renamed the title of your thread

I believe you can get a 2" hitch that will sit under the bumper for the 06, not positive but I have seen them for the 05's

I THOUGHT the package included the tranny cooler as well. It did on my 94. I have it on my 07 too, and I thought I saw a tranny cooler listed as part of the package. Could be wrong though.

I have seen an aftermarket 2 inch reciever for 2006-2007 which hangs below the bumper where it would have been anyway if not for the "built in" bumper/hitch. My local guy wanted $139 but J.C. Whitney lists it for $119.99 for Hidden Hitch 5,000 pound rated or 7500 with weigh distributing setup. I would like to see how low it hangs both for apperances and ease of access to the spare tire. I was planning on swapping my 1 1/4 bumper for the 2 inch soon after purchase until I realized only 2002-2005 hitches were bolt on!

I think on the 2nd gens 98+, tranny coolers were standard.

i've seen a class III hitch added to a 2006 Explorer. It sits below the class II hitch. besides looking like crap, it looks really stupid.

As for upgradeing "class 2 towing package" on 2007 4.6 V8 to "class 3 towing package" equalivant, it requires 2" hitch reciever and wireing conversion from 4 wire flat to 7 wire round. I would like to know why Ford dropped the transmission cooler(cost?) and if any changes in cooling system were made to compensate? Larger hitch does bolt on under welded class 2. Looks a little heavy duty maybe for some people whose taste is on the "prim" side.
