Hello Everyone, I am a new user here and am enjoying reading all the info on this site. I do have a question on towing with a new Ford explorer with the 4.6 and 3:73 gears, I am looking to tow a 5000lb boat and trailer only a couple times a year usually one time down and one time back from the Jersey shore about 50 flat miles. The owners manual says with my towing package the vehicle is rated for 7140lbs, my question is what are your opinions on this, I know with the short wheel base the ride won't be good but is the power train sufficient for this kind of towing. Thanks in advance

I have towed a 6000# camping trailer with my V6 a distance of about 175 each way 4 times so far this year with absolutely no issues.

You won't have any problems. Make sure your trailer brakes are adequate and that you have proper load distribution i.e. proper tongue weight and follow at a safe distance. Your boat weighs 5k don't forget to add fuel toys etc in to the mix to stay under the 7140lbs

You might want to add an additional tranny cooler.

Also, a switch to synthetic tranny fluid will help too.

Good luck .....

You will be just fine towing that. Just make sure to adjust your driving technique to accomodate a 9500 lb vehicle now. The 4.6 should pull that with more ease than you would imagine. I pulled a boat with mine for my buddy since he didnt have a hitch and I really didnt even notice the difference. His boat was not that heavy, but still.
