i found a plug under the driver side rear quarter of my '99 sport right in the corner. it looks like an 8 pin round grey connector, and it has a red rubber boot capping it off. is this a plug for trailer wiring? if so where can i get the harness to plug into it?

yes- advance auto or autozone has the wiring for $10-15

Bought the harness today. I went through quite an ordeal for this. Turns out that this 8 pin connector is the connection for the explorers with the OEM tow package and in case someone tries to sell you one does not require a modulite. The site posted below is for reese and if you search 118241 you can see a pic of it. If you want quick and dirty solution buy the plain four pin connector from any autoparts or trailer shop and cut the connector(8 pin) and solder the wires together using shrink wrap too. You will notice there are only four pins used in the 8-pin socket connector. Hence four wires to four wires. This is what I discovered. Hope it helps someone.

Why didn't you just plug it in instead of botching the wiring? Or buy an OEM harness, it comes with a cool clip that fastens to the bumper.

i dont have the factory tow pacage and mine came with the truck. plugs in no problem.

Oh God no!! Don't cut up the car! Just buy the harness adapter that works correctly. You can spend too much and get it from the dealer, or you can go on eBay and buy one cheap. I see them all the time there. Just get the one for your year vehicle.

I did that with mine originally... Had to... Nobody in town had the correct harness on the Saturday I needed to pull the trailer. It also allowed me to relocate the plug to the jack storage compartment to keep it out of the weather...

Haven't had an issue even after adding the OEM harness later-on.

The reese number I posted was for the factory harness which I purchased. Please look at the website for those that are really interested. The hardwiring of the connector was a solution i propose to others, as I had to have the harness I installed ordered in, but in a quick and dirty fix you can solder a 4 pin flat connector. so check out 118241 at reese products. Just enter the number in the search at the top right and double click on search result and voila a picture of the harness. Hope this clarifies any misunderstandings. BTW there is nothing wrong with hard wiring the harness, I personally know of two guys who installed them that way in their explorers and have never had an issue. I just wanted the factory look. Cheers
