Transmission is Dying - Please Help!

My 96 4.0 Auto is doing some odd things. When you accelerate and get to about 30-35mph it acts like it is slipping into neutral and the rpms continue to rise. It then abrubtly slams into gear and goes on it's merry way. It does this from a stand still or on a roll. The O/D Off light is flashing as well and I can't shut it off. It just started this morning. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

bad news

I have a 96 4.0 that had the exact same problem. I let mine go and ended up needing an entire rebuild ~$2200 yikes!!

Recommend, change the fluid and filter - it might fix it long enough to trade it in.

The transmissions in these things are not too strong - I think they are the same trans that was in the Pinto -

Another option is getting one out of the bone yard and doing the work yourself. About the cheapest I could find one for was ~$750.

Good luck!

On a side note, my transmission is still sloppy, its been about a year since the rebuild and I'm already starting to experience intermittant delay going into reverse.

Drive it (before you have to pay even more to have it towed) to the transmission shop. Or find something that will cover it up long enough to get rid of it. I'm not a huge fan of screwing the next guy so I can't really recommend the second idea, but I have had it happen in the past. On the other my 92 did the same thing when the TPS connector came off but that was accompanied by the ever on check engine light. Good luck with it.

The filter and fluid are only about a year old. The check engine light has been on for about 6 months. I got tired of chasing bugs. I just thought the O/D light flshing sounded funny. I'll look into connections tonight. Any other suggestions is appreciated.

I can't help you with the OD light cause the pre95's don't have them but from what I have read it almost never means anything good or cheap. What type of codes are you getting from the CEL?
Some engine problems can have a huge effect on transmission performance, such as my problem with the TPS, it didn't affect how the engine ran but it really affected my transmission shifting.

I haven't had the codes pulled. It almost sounds like 3rd gear took a dump. This would have to happen as soon as I got a new Mustang GT.

Time to get rid of the exploder huh? If you get around to it you might want to have the codes pulled and see what comes up.
