Tranny Cooler and Filter

Thinking about installing an additional cooler and filter. Perhaps a PERMA-COOL kit/product. Does anyone ahevany experience with this job. Wondering where to locate the parts, how to do the job and if it is worth doing at all..

I have a perma cool filter on mine and an additional cooler.

I like having the filter. I just change it when i do oil changes. Gives me some peace of mind about keeping the fluid clean.

I also have an additional tranny cooler. I have a 1991 with an aux cooler from the factory for the "tow" package. what i did was just buy a used cooler of the same type and mounted it right in front of the factory one. when the grill is put back on, you can't even tell there is another cooler in there unless you know what you are looking for.

install is fairly easy for the cooler and depending on where you put the filter thats not to bad either.

adding this stuff also increases your fluid capacity a bit and the extra fluid should help keep your tranny in good shape a little longer

I've got a B&M tranny cooler on mine...its pretty nice. Relatively easy to install.

i've got a permacool filter setup on mine and it was easy to install and definately makes a difference i think. it gives you an excuse to have an extra qt of fluid in your tranny and gives you piece of mind at the very least!

What drop in tranny temp did the coolers produce?

I have the factory tow package cooler, a big aftermarket one infront of it, a summit electric fan infront of them, (the fan required some serious grill mods....but is not noticable too bad from the front)a big summit oil filter, and a B&M temp guage.The filter if nothing else adds another liter of fluid(Keeping it cooler)and gives a nice place to mount the temp sender without cutting the line.

I had the "Permacool" style filter on mine. I bought the filter setup from Summit.com for about $25. I also had an extra trans cooler installed after the filter.

I removed it temporarily because I was having some issues and wanted to make sure that it wasn't related to the trans filter. It turned out to be caused by an intermittent misfire. Replacing the coil pack solved the problem.

I plan to reinstall it this spring along with a larger cooler, possibly the factory cooler installed on the V8 models. I also want to fab a new bracket to improve the hose routing compared to my first setup.

Is the factory V8 cooler larger than the factory V6 one?

My V6 only came with the radiator internal cooler. I think the additional cooler is standard on the V8. I think there is only one factory cooler. I almost bought the factory one from the dealer a few years ago, but had no idea how to mount it, so I took it back. Now I have the Ford CD so it shows how the factory cooler fits.

I had an aftermarket cooler which is much smaller than the factory unit.

My V6 sohc has the extra filter. It might have to do with the tow package.

I have a B&M Cooler with the Perma-cool filter.
Easy instal.
I had to fabricate a few mounting brackets, but it was all cake.
I have not noticed any differance other than my increased confidance and peace of mind.

Does any one have any pictures of the mounted coolers and the actual splices to the existing cooler lines? I was looking at mine and think they're rigid all the way. How woud I splice into them???

I am not sure if they changed it in 2000 but I actually have rubber hoses coming out.
I will try to figure out a way to post the pic.
I am Elite so I know there is an easy way.
I am just not too bright on the computer

I didn't splice into the cooler lines. Instead, a bought a set of adapters that allow you to disconnect the line from the bottom of the radiator (exiting the built in cooler) and redirect it to the filter (and to a separate cooler). After the line leaves the aux cooler it goes back to the original hard metal return line.

The disadvantage of using the adapter is that the line leaving the radiator must make a 180 deg bend for my installation; I may just cut the hard line and use a 3/8 compression tube fitting instead when I reinstall so that the bend is less severe.
