I have just installed and put in an additionioal oil cooler for the tranny and with the slipping I had from yesterdays post with the shift solinoid I found that a plug had fallen off not the nuetral saftey switch plug there is another plug on the same side of the A4LD that will not stay in it is loose as the day is long and I cannot see why. But when I connected it it still does the same slipping and the tranny is very hot after just a 10 min. trip to the store. It slipps really bad off the line but gets up to speed pretty well.

Could the lines be blown out? they flushed o.k. but I am still alittle nervous about them due to the tranny giving me a burn trying to check the plug when I returned.

what is the plug for and when I cleaned it with contact cleaner it made no difference in the tranny slipping and shifting trouble.

More advice is needed.

Thanks in advance.

um...is the extra cooler u put on warm, if not your lines are switched around....check that first, but i don't recomend you drive it much like that, you may end up doing damage to the tranny.

this is the connector that supplys power to the 3-4 and lock up solinoid it can be purchased seperatly and changed with out pulling the tranny let me know if you need details

cjbarron5,
Thanks for the input I believe you chimed in yesterday. So the plug goes to the 3-4 and lockup solinoid and I have been driving for about 2 days without it about 150 miles a day. how much is this going to mess up the trans? I am going to replace the solinoid and the tc lockup solinoid and see what happens., new filter as well while I have the pan off. would this still cause the heating issue the lines are correct.

i would try to blow the lines out with some air but make sure you unhook them from both ends first did you try to bypass the stock cooler? frickea86 is right if your lines arent warm then you have little to no fluid flow which means death to an a4ld and the lines to the cooler really dont matter as long as they are hooked up i run my flow out to the top of the cooler and my flow in to the bottom of the cooler (ie hot air rises) so the fluid going into the tranny is as cool as i can get it naturally

would having that plug loose or off have caused all the problems I described?
would it have damaged the solinoids?
should I clean the valve as well when I am replacing the solinoids?

The cooler is warm but not hot. the original was flushed and blown out before I put it back as well. they are both warm but the tranny was hot enough to burn my skin not blister just a red patch of skin. I am confused??? I think maybe the slipping of the tranny due to the plug being off may have caused the heat. what do you think?

I bypassed the original cooler first but a mechanic friend told me to clean it out and put it back on because the more surface to cool the fluid the better. was keeping it coot till the slipping issue occured.

Any details would be a plus. thanks.

yeah the slipping will deffinatly cause lots of heat if you replace the plug and have not done any real damage to the tranny the excessive temp will go down

if you can eliminate the slipping it will improve the fuel milage not to mention peice of mind the plug on the tranny has a c clip on it i think its on the inside of the case so the valve body will have to come off which you will have to do to replace the solinoids any way hope this helps some let me know if you have more questions

I will be changing them this afternoon so any tips or help would be great.

dis connect the battery (kinda obvious) you will need a floor jack to support the tranny (its easier to remove the crossmember ) drain the pan get the torque specs and sequence from your local ford dealer along with a plate to case gasket the solinoids are pretty straight forward but dont loose any valves out of the bores and remove them one at a time once the valve body is off you can see the connector for the 3-4 and lockup solinoid harness agian if i remember right the c clip is inside the case un do the wires and the c clip and do what you need to do (replace or repair) any more qs ill be here most of the day

Does the cross member have to come off? if they are located in the bottom under or inside the pan they are infront of the crossmember right.

yes but it is easier to get the pan off with the cross member off but it can be done the other way just expect a tranny fluid bath

Big pan. I am doing this in 85 degrees with gravel under my back I don't want any more work than I need. I have removed the pans before without the crossmember out.
thanks for the input thought it is a good sugesstion.

How many solinoides do I need to buy just the shift solinoid? I am getting it from checker and it shows it on the web sight but not the tc lockup solinoid.

there are 2 but they are the "same" per say i would buy the 3-4 solinoid since this is your first code and go from there it really depends on what you find when you pull the panthe connecter may be the whole problem its kind of a gamble

wow, you guyz are way more in depth then i even know...lol...listen to cjbarron5 he knows his stuff. Also, it seems weired that the external cooler isn't hott, mine is normally warm on the outlet hose from the cooler and very hott on the inlet hose on the tranny cooler...if that makes sense...lol...hope this problem gets fixed before big $$$$ my become a problem....good luck

Tranny fluid leak.

91 eddie w/ A4LD. 4.0 engine
I now have a tranny leak in the very front edge of the bell housing.
what is the possability that it is the torque converter?
or is it the front seal?

It runs pretty decent but I really nailed it to get through the shift pattern a couple times to make sure overdrive was working now when I stopped and smelled burning fuid I saw that it had a puddle about 7" in diameter after only 3 min of idle.

Still shifts and runs o.k. but I just want to know when I tear it out what to replace.

Any help would be great.
