The tranny in my '93 (A4LD) doesn't want to upshift from first gear unless I almost completely let off the accelerator, and then it sometimes wants to rev before it goes into second. Other gears seem perfectly fine, including at highway speeds.

I just changed the fluid, filter, and have now done the complete flush, pumping through about 14 quarts of fluid. The old fluid was pretty dark and nasty. It had first been changed at about 80k, and now again at about 115K.

Any diagnoses appreciated...

are you on the original trans? If so it might be going, but if you just said the old fluid was dark and nasty the new fluid might just need to settle in, not sure. Never had that prob with my 94'

The same thing just happened to me. Had the whole 9 yards done and I think some of the "gunk" must get hung up in there. I only had the problem when I first took off in the morning, then it was OK. I bought a quart of Lucas transmission "stuff" and put it in. It's supposed to free up whatevers sticking, lubricate and other miraculous wonders. It's been a couple hundred miles and I think the problems gone. It may have gone away without the stuff, but I have no proof the stuff worked. I just know it's better. I found out a little late that you shouldn't get the flush, if you haven't taken care of your fluid(or you don't know how the previous owner took care of it). Anyway good luck.

I had the same problem last year and there is some diaphram in the tranny that was worn out I took it to the dealer and it was about 150 to replace it

Sounds like that could be the vacuum modulator - I wonder about that also.

Anyone...? Bueller...?

Do a search for "Speed Governor" and my username for some recent stuff I wrote on the subject. I'm too lazy to type it all out right now, lol. :p

Not in Love

But I appreciate the utility of the SUV, and I love not having a car payment!

You must be in love with yours, to still have it at 167k and on your way to your third tranny rebuild! And yours is an XLT!

Longs - Hey I made that comment when..

I noticed it started slipping again. However it was low on fluid with no real trace of a leak. So, I cleaned the bottom off with Varsol (so I could look for leaks later) added a quart or so and it seems better now.

And yes, I just can't bring myself around to selling it, yet that is.
