Tranny finally got me?

The only servos you can get at

for $200 are the intermediate and overdrive band. The intermediate band only operates in 2nd and 3rd. And you're having this problem in 1 too. The servo closest to the torque converter is the overdrive, the nest is the intermediate. There is an O-ring on the cover that you have from the previous kit. The piston is a one piece rubber molded unit that has to be ordered. Have to check how many sizes are available for the intermediate. On the cover it tells the size as AB, BB etc. A little hard to see one failing like that but it's a good story. Hard to come up with a plausible failure mode. Sounds like you were doing some high torque shifts for a while. Any chance you could have broken a weld on that band? If you got to the VM from the seat, you should be able to do this. How did the test go when operating in manual 1 and 2. Still could be in the valve body. Untill results of 1 & 2 test, VM is still suspect. Sounds like a lot of hot rodding for an old tranny.

Operating in manual 1 and 2 worked fine I guess... The engine did not rev like it was in neutral, so I still have those gears. Could this problem be a combination of a sticking governor (the 1-2 shift problem) and a failing intermediate band servo (the 2-3 shift problem)? I have noticed that is is much harder to get into 3rd gear than it is to get into second. Getting into second only requires taking my foot off of the gas for a second and then reapplying it... Getting into third requires revving to 3800 RPM +/- 200 RPM, taking my foot off of the gas and letting the RPMs drop to 2800 RPM or so, and then slowly pressing and releasing the gas pedal in such a way that they RPMs are held between 2700 and 3000 RPM (but continue to fluctuate - they cannot be held constant otherwise it will not shift) until the shift occurs into third gear. Somewhat complex... I have also noticed that if I am on the highway and floor it to pass someone, downshifts (feels like there are two of them) and their subsequent upshifts work fine...

Your bands and clutches are fine

2nd uses four of the six clutches and bands. With first, reverse, and overdrive you have everything. So the problem is back to the VM, govenor and valve body. You didn't get the manual did you? The kit is supplied with the extension housing gasket but not extension to transfer case. My transfer came off without damage to the gasket and this could be resealed since it really isn't in a bath. Govenor should show some wear by now and if you want performance should be cleaned up. The three areas left are things that you can do without dropping tranny.

How does the servo factor in to all of that? Should I go ahead and have them check/replace it (He said he has seen this before and 9 times out of 10 it is this servo) or should I tell them not to and instead do the governor and valve body?

And what if it doesn't

Think it would just be throwing money at it. Mine is a 92 with over 200K and I didn't replace them. Even with lots of powdered metal floating around they didn't seem worn. There could be a pressure interreaction with the valve body but have low confidence in it. ATSG manual keeps saying vacuum modulator and govenor. Have you done anything to test the vacuum modulator like seeing if if can hold a vacuum? So are you in sunny PA now?

I'm starting to hate posting. I have the ZoneAlarm internet firewall and I can't get half a sentence in before I'm being invaded. I't taking four times longer to post than it used to cause it locks up my screen and I don't notice it. Can't go 30 seconds without one. Damn these people who are out selling your address. And the only place I visit are these car sites.

Well I am going to break down and test the VM this afternoon after work. Then if it turns out fine, I won't have any second thoughts about handing the truck over to the shop. If it does not turn out fine, then maybe I will have found the solution to the problem. I'll let everyone know how it goes tomorrow.

Checked the VM last night and it was fine. It's kind of cool that I can now remove my seats and console, pull up the carpet, and remove the VM within an hour :) (It was tougher the first time since the nut and bolt had not been loosened in probably 9 years.) I turned the screw waaay out and that had a little effect... Now if I lightly throttle it, it will shift out of first at around 4500 RPM. Still no shifting out of second though. It gets dropped off at the shop today and we will see how that goes.

The shop said they could not get to my truck on Friday, and did not call me yesterday with an update... I am going to stop by today and see what is up. The thing probably needs a tranny rebuild with my luck! :(

Side note: They gave me a super cool '92 Escort to drive until my truck is fixed. 1.9 liter I4, spoiler, plastic rim covers... I'm out painting the town with that baby!!
