Tranny fluid change

I have a question regarding the changing of the transmission fluid... can you flush the tranny with the filter removed (similiar to removing the thermastat prior to flushing the cooling system). I read the flush/change options using hoses, buckets, etc... but none mentioned that they removed the filter.

It makes some sense to remove the filter prior to running fluid up and out... but any concerns about doing this?

Of course you would add the "new" filter (no debris) after any flushing or draining.

I do not drop the pan to flush mine, nor do I remove the external filter.

Thanks Al for your quick response, but can it be done and should it be done (at least in this instance)?

I understand that when you flush the tranny you don't remove the filter, but do you think it might help and is there any problems with doing this?

when I did mine, I dropped the pan and put in a new filter

messy job but a job made easier if you jack up the X a little bit and also cut holes into a trash barrel cover and lay it on top of the standard black "catch-all" receptable that people use to change their oil

Can you flush without the filter in place? Then add the filter after?

Oh well, I will just change the filter and the little bit of fluid...

I would think you would want to leave the filter in while you do the flush. That way it may catch the crud that could lodge in a valve & cause problems. After the flush the filter should deffinetly be changed.
Having said that, if you arnt experiancing any problems & the fluid still has some pink color, I would only change the filter once a year and forget the flush.
I got a drain plug for the trans pan so that next year it wont be near as messy.

Doing a teanny flush is so easy and simple, I see no reason not to do it.

OK, Al I just did a new tranny filter tonight, and I am not too happy with the fluid. So next time I am think that I will do a flush. But I do NOT know how!!!! MY 93' has 75,000 miles now. it has the tranny cooler if that helps......So if you can help your local buddy out, Please

I did a search and came up with this thread, I want to get out more than the 4 or 5 quarts with the filter and gasket, I re-read the thread and I still do not know how to the flush!!!!!! Sorry, but it you can quote it may be, sorry to bo a PITA, but thank you

I disconnected the “to transmission” hose from my remote filter housing. I plugged and clamped the disconnected line and added and hose clamped a 6 ft length of 3/8” line to the housing. The other end went into a calibrated water jug ( 1 gal size ).

We used 15 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF.

Even though this ATF ( Mobil 1 ) has about 40 k miles on it, it still looked remarkably good, slightly darker in color.

After the flush/fill was completed, I added a new K & N filter to the housing and reattached the hoses.

The procedure took my son and I about 20 minutes to complete. There was no mess since we were well prepared for the flush; nary a drop was spilled.
This procedure is so simple that I can hardly believe that I used to pay Jiffy Lube to do it.<<
