Guys i have an 04 explorer, the tranny has never had a fluid change and is probably overdue.... ive looked before and cannot even find a dipstick, i belive i have been told, there is not one...... i see underneath its got the standard drain pain.... is there a changable filter behind that pan? how do you refill the new fluid if there is not dipstick to funnel the fluid into? what fluid does these trannys take? thanks so much

The drain plug is a two part drain plug. If you look at the drain plug there is a 1/8" plug in the middle, there is a little nipple inside the pan and you have to use a hand pump to fill it. There is a filter inside that needs to be changed. There is a lot to it but it is simple stuff. There are several post on this board that describe the task. I just changed mine today I will post what I did and add some links, so keep an eye out for my upcoming post.

I am a dedicated do-it yourselfer, but I will say that flushing Explorer (5R55W) trannies is a pita. There is a standard type fileter in the pan, but as you noted, no dipstick and worse, no easy way to refill it.

Check the link above, but consider paying to have it done by a reputable shop.
