I am hoping that I can explain this well enough that you will be able to help me.

When I accelerate at part to moderate throttle, my Auto tranny makes a "GGrrrrrnnnnnn" sound as it shifts from 2nd to 3rd (from what I can tell). It seems to do it under every amount of throttle except for Full throttle. It does this regardless of being cold or hot (outdoor temp or vehicle temp).

It also only does it on UPSHIFTS. It sounds like it is coming from the front of the X. Not sure if it is tranny or if it could be something like the front differential or torque converter. Tranny fluid and center differential fluids are all fine.

Previous owner tried towing a horse trailor a couple times with vehicle before she traded it in on a V10 Ford Truck. I did NOT notice this until a couple weeks after I owned it.

Suggestions?

i would take it to a good reputable tranny shop sounds like a internal hard parts problem but i wouldnt rule out the t case if it is 4x4

The shifting is controlled by electric solenoids, one could be sticking - it's happened before. Worth dropping the pan and having a look, possibly even replacing the solenoid if its cheap enough.
