swapping a 5.0 into a 4.0 97 explorers.

What I found was arguments for and against it.

I have been looking for my new explorer and it needs to be a 5.0 based on my goals.

The problem is the area I am in does not seem to be letting any good appropriate vehicles out on the market. Alot of overpriced 'its snowing' sales but no deals.

I did however find a 97 with a 4.0l taken out to put in another. I can get it for around 300.00 cdn

Everything supposedly works and is ideal for my planned build.

My question is how hard is it going to be to swap the wiring for the 5.0?

will it become a dashboard tear down as well as a engine bay tear down?

Is there major parts relocation required? steering issues??

Its a 4X4 version.

This thread describes my goal and intentions.

I am moving to canada from California so I can pull engines from both california and canada. The engine and trans do not need to be in good shape as i am going to rebuild both.

What other vehicles can i pull the same engine and trans from?

Any tips or a thread devoted to this issue would be great.

I have two days to decide on the 300.00 97.

Thanks for any help.

well I am going to probably buy it anyway but still no one has swapped a 5.0l into a 4.0l?

I finally found swap threads and enough info to justify the build.

I wouldnt think it would be to hard to do seeing that you can get a explorer in a 5.0, Im sure your going to need the engine mounts and computer and most likely the tranny also. I have been thinking about doing the same thing to mine next summer, not sure if im going to do it but I have been thinking about it. Im kinda supprise no one else has piped in yet.

You didn't search well enough. There have been a ton of these swaps done. Check Fortune410 for one. Very doable and easy if you have a donor car. A major pain in the ass and very expensive if you don't.

If you are going to do the swap I'd buy a complete V8 that has been rolled lightly, or with high miles. Much easier to swap it in when you have all the parts on a roller. I've seen totaled ones for around 1k, and ones for around 2k with no damage and 150ish miles on them. Strip all you need, and sell the rest.

I agree with the above statement. I have done this swap and it is fairly easy if you have a complete donor. There are a lot of small parts that you will have to track down if you try to piece it together. You will have to swap the entire front harness that runs from under the brake booster, all the way around the front and back to the heater box and cruise control.

I confirmed it with 410 and he gave me the main details I needed.

Going to be fun.

Thank you for the input and help.

I am going to pick up the 97 with the 4.0l missing for 300.00 then i figure i will drop a new/used 4.0l in it while i search for the perfect donor X.

Thanks for the help.
