First off Im new to this site and Im new to ford's period. I have acquired a 91 explorer, the tranny seems to be slipping in it, is it true that ford has had a problem with their trannies back in those years?

If someone could give me some info and tips on what to check or do i would appreciate it, i am somewhat mechanically inclined, i just dont know anything about fords.
How do i check on what tranny it is?

Thanks,

Rob

First off... wlecome to the site. I'm pretty sure that right here you'll find all the answers to your questions.
As for the tranny? don't know of any unusuall problems with Ford trannys... just like everybody else if not better.

Check fluid - color, smell - change fluid and filter and see what happenes... hope it will help. If not, post again

Give as detailed a description of what you are experiencing as possible. Also the mileage on the trannie, and what you know of it's maintenance history. Does it start out ok, slips in what gears?, describe how it works in each gear, how it feels. The more info the better the help you can get here.

Okay, the other night i took it down te road for a test drive (first time in it), and it seemed like it wouldnt shift out of first, now I just got this off a buddy of mine so i havent had much time to check into it, however i asked him about it and he said it shifts fine after it warms up, so what could this be?

Likely the governor. It's a DIY remove, clean and replace procedure, see the thread My A4LD rebuild which covers this aspect of the transmission.

Is that the kind of tranny that is in mine? a A4LD?
Thanks, ill check the governor.

automatic 1991 Explorers had an A4LD trannys just like all 1st generation X's... I've heard something about a different tranny though too.

Check the governor... most likely that's what is causing your tranny not to shift.

now what exactly am i looking for when i get to this governor?
Am i replacing it or just cleaning it?

Sorry bout all the questions, im new to this.

Thanks,

Rob

you want to remove it, disassemble it, and if necessary polish it. See the procedure in the thread "My A4LD Rebuild Diary". It's illustrated there.
